About the team and position
The Manager, Benefits is a critical role on the Total Rewards team and is responsible for the overall development and delivery of Carvana’s Benefits programs. In addition to having responsibility for program administration, this role contributes to strategy planning with the goal of designing programs that our team members love while balancing cost priorities. You’ll be working with our health plans (including medical and dental), welfare plans (including Life, STD, LTD), the 401(k) Plan and other employee benefits programs. You are a proactive, critical thinker who is naturally curious and intrinsically motivated to continuously improve processes. You have a passion for the employee experience and strive to deliver a simple, compassionate, and efficient process for employees to engage with their Benefits programs. You have a desire to educate and encourage utilization of our many programs. You will lead, develop (and likely grow) a team of Benefits-focused talent. This role reports directly to the Associate Director, Total Rewards and is located in our Tempe, AZ headquarters onsite 5 days per week (Monday - Friday).
What you’ll be doing
- Responsible for overall delivery of Benefits programs through development of scalable, efficient and employee-focused processes.
- Contribute toBenefits strategy development and implementation, including change management, project planning, and compliance reviews.
- Lead, coach, teach, guide, motivate, and inspire a team of Specialists and Coordinators handling day-to-day administration and employee interaction.
- Research new and manage existing vendor/service provider relationships.
- Lead the annual Open Enrollment strategy, communications, and execution.
- Develop a strong Benefits communication strategy to help educate employees on benefit offerings and increase employee utilization of programs.
- Develop ways to scale the Benefits administration process as our headcount grows, fostering a focus on delivering an amazing employee experience.
- Work collaboratively with various internal teams: Accounting, People Systems & Data, Technology Services, Payroll, Legal, HR Operations, and various business leaders.
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of various benefits laws including ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, ERISA, FMLA, ADA, Section 125, Section 132, 401(k).
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What you should know/have
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years experience in all aspects of benefits program administration (health & welfare, retirement).
- 2+ years experience leading a team of high performing individuals.
- 3+ years of HR related product management, designing and implementing Benefits/HR systems/tools, including electronic data flow between HRIS, Payroll, & vendors.
- Strong understanding of applicable laws and regulations including ability to interpret & apply rules to program design and delivery.
- Deep understanding and experience in delivering high levels of customer service.
- Strong consultative skills and the ability to build solid relationships with stakeholders across the business.
- Strong presentation skills coupled with the ability to simplify complex subjects so they make sense to employees.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment - must be flexible and able to quickly pivot in response to changing priorities.
- Must be skilled at anticipating problems, creating contingency plans, managing multiple priorities, problem solving and organizing logistics.
- Highly organized, able to prioritize work under pressure on a number of projects/initiatives at the same time in a rapidly growing environment.
- Proactive self-directed work approach, ability to work autonomously and in ambiguous situations.
- Consistently able to use ultimate discretion regarding confidential and sensitive personal data.
These Qualifications are a Plus
- Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) designation.
- Experience managing large-scale employee benefits programs (5,000+ employees), associated vendor management, and program development and delivery.
- Experience managing self-funded medical plans.
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, HR or related field.
- Experience with the Workday platform.
