Job mission

As a Research Engineer, you’ll work in the team that owns our core product - the bidding system and its predictive models. Our job is to build the system that buys effective ad opportunities at a low auction price, millions of times per second. We find the best bid based on predicted user reaction, auction market prices, client budget and current spending.

About the team

The Performance team consists of five Data Scientists and Engineers from diverse backgrounds. We value curiosity, tech expertise and a product mindset and we enjoy discussing statistical and technical challenges, within and outside of our team. While other teams are responsible for the platform parts of model deployment, data, and analytical products, but we are responsible for the business parts of the algorithm.

Job responsibilities

  • Implement new bidding logic and technical changes to the bidding system in Go, e.g. business logic around campaigns, ads, and budgets
  • Implement custom predictive models in Python and Tensorflow
  • Find issues and improvements in a system of humans, predictive models, control modules and decision algorithms.
  • Run experiments to optimize and deploy using our internal tools and A/B testing infrastructure
  • Investigate system output using Pivot, Druid and SQL. Diagnose causes for unexpected campaign behavior and support operational teams in custom setups
  • Define technical solutions and implementation plans for conceptual solutions in your domain of the bidding system. Or suggest your own solutions.
  • Implement and improve monitoring of the bidding system in our high-performance data stores
  • Voluntary on-call rotation participation

Job requirements

  • Excellent software engineering skills in Python and Go and development best practices (test design and CI unit testing, environment management, version control).
  • Experience in working with cloud platforms for large-scale data processing and model deployment (e.g. Google BigQuery, Airflow, Vertex AI, Mlflow).
  • Solid experience in statistics: evaluation metrics and principles, experiment design and evaluation, data selection issues, exploratory data analysis on large scale.
  • Experience implementing and tuning custom neural networks in Tensorflow or Pytorch is a plus.
  • Applied expertise in any of these domains is a plus: real-time bidding and programmatic advertising, mathematical optimization/operations research/control theory, causal inference.

Our promise

  • Unlimited vacation days - for real. We give you the freedom to figure out the most productive work-life balance for you
  • Mentorship program for technical and non-technical skills
  • A truly modern place to work: work from home, from our brand new office in Berlin, or remotely - your work environment is yours to design
  • Generous remuneration package including virtual shares, a dedicated education budget
  • End of the year bonus determined by company performance
  • Travel to our offices around the globe for a short term assignment for up to a month every two years
  • Comfortable work setup - laptop, phone, screen(s), standing desk etc.
  • Support for your setup while working from home
  • Wellness benefits such as sports memberships, Nilo Health subscription and internet reimbursements
  • Company events including breakfast twice a week, team lunches, birthday and milestone celebrations, quarterly team events and company-wide parties & trips
