You'll join Explosion as a software engineer in a new role focussed on data infrastructure and engineering. This role will work internally to ensure that Explosion is able to execute its machine learning development reliably and productively. Example systems that you will develop, extend or maintain:
The role will benefit from some conceptual understanding of machine learning, but we are particularly interested in strong programming skills and experience configuring and managing cloud infrastructure.
Explosion is a tools company – specifically, developer tools for AI. Our products are intended to make the workdays of some specific type of workers more pleasant and productive. It's also quite a good business to be in. Salaries for AI are high, so anything which improves the productivity of AI development is very valuable. We can also expect the general market for AI tooling to continue to grow.
We believe that technologies like Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision have commercial applications that are very broad, but somewhat shallower than what the most breathless hype of the last few years might suggest. We therefore see "AI development" as just another type of software development, like web development. "Just". That still makes it a pretty big thing, that will deliver lots of value into the world. But that value will be delivered by a large number of software developers working closely with the technology, spread out across all sorts of companies.
It's fashionable for young technology companies to make a lot of grandiose statements about what they're all about. Us, we're simply trying to run an honest business. We want to provide something of value and get paid to do so. We do find the work itself interesting as well, and we hope to have a team who finds it interesting too, both because it will make everyone's days more pleasant, but also because it will lead to much better success.
