E-SPACE is hiring a

MAC/Layer-2 Systems Engineer

Saratoga, United States
Full-Time
Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you’ve come to the right place!

E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems.

We’re intentional, we’re unapologetically curious and we’re 100% committed to innovate space-based communications and deliver actionable intelligence that will expand global economies, protect space and our planet and enhance our overall quality of life.

As a Satellite MAC (Medium Access Control) / Layer-2 Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for gathering system requirements and designing, modeling and simulating the different layers of the communications stack for a LEO satellite constellation communication network. In this role, you will leverage your up to 10 years of expertise in system analysis and design of a multiple-access wireless MAC.

This position will report to the Sr. Direction of RF Systems Engineering and will work closely with systems, software, hardware and test teams that are responsible for delivering the communications payload.  This position is based in our Saratoga, CA office.

What you will do

  • Understand system requirements in depth, derive layer-2 subsystem requirements and drive design and test plans using modeling and simulation results.
  • Design and develop advanced wireless MAC layer algorithms (channel-aware, QoS-aware, user-aware scheduling, scheduled and grant-free access schemes, link adaptation, mobility and handover, multibeam management, segmentation and reassembly, retransmissions, etc.) specifically adapted for the dynamic LEO environment.
  • Analyze and optimize layer-2 performance, taking into consideration factors like rapidly changing channel conditions, Doppler effects, and satellite power constraints.
  • Develop innovative solutions for link adaptation, interference mitigation, and handover strategies in LEO 5G networks.
  • Build realistic simulation models and conduct performance evaluations of PHY designs under diverse LEO scenarios.
  • Collaborate with RF, modem, and antenna engineers to ensure optimal integration of the MAC layer with satellite and ground station hardware.

What you bring to this role

  • MS or PhD in EE/CS/CE or a related field
  • 10 years of experience
  • Deep understanding of wireless communications and medium access principles, especially in the context of satellite systems.
  • Strong knowledge of communications theory, modulation and coding schemes, medium access schemes for orthogonal and non-orthogonal scenarios, link adaptation including power control, segmentation, packing and reassembly of packets, link-level messaging schemes.  Should know the why and not just the what.
  • Hands-on experience with designing, implementing and testing various MAC layer algorithms in simulation and on target.
  • Proficiency in simulation tools like MATLAB, Python, NS3 or specialized satellite network modelling software.
  • Excellent problem-solving with a from-first-principles approach.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.  Team player.

Bonus points for the following

  • Strong knowledge of 3GPP standards, preferably 5GNR.

We are redefining how satellites are designed, manufactured and used—so we’re looking for candidates with passion, deep knowledge and direct experience on LEO satellite component development, design and in-orbit activities. If that’s your experience – then we’ll be immediately wow-ed.
