Chan Zuckerberg Biohub is hiring a

Lightsheet Microscopy Instrumentation Engineer - Royer Group

San Francisco, United States

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.

Our Vision

  • We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
  • We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
  • The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond

Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.

The Opportunity

The Royer Group, a lab led by Loic Royer at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub is seeking a Lightsheet Microscopy Instrumentation Engineer with strong coding and software engineering skills, knowledge of instrumentation electronics, experience interfacing code with hardware, and a solid understanding of physics and optics. A successful candidate will design a high-performance and smart microscope control software framework in Python/C++/C to control advanced light-sheet microscopes. Willingness to learn and grow in optics would be welcomed and encouraged. In this position, you will collaborate with optical scientists, bioengineers, computer scientists, and biologists to facilitate optical design, instrument alignment and diagnosis, and automation of time-lapse imaging of live specimens.

What You'll Do

  • Architect a modular and distributed instrument control framework for different kinds of light-sheet microscopes
  • Design a framework for a generic object-oriented hardware abstraction layer (HAL)
  • Implement device adapters for different hardware components (stages, cameras, lasers, DACs, …)
  • Code a high-performance OpenGL-based camera image viewer
  • Conceive a flexible graphical user interface for configuring live and timelapse acquisition modes
  • Collaborate with optical scientists and bioengineers in the design, construction, and maintenance of advanced bespoke light sheet microscopes
  • Collaborate with optical scientists, bioengineers, computer scientists, and biologists to implement requested features of the control software including: hardware interfaces, acquisition modes, graphical user interfaces, ‘smart’ automation, high-performance data visualization, and data saving
  • Collaborate with image processing and analysis experts to facilitate the storage and management of acquired datasets
  • Help microscope users (Biologists) with experimental design, microscope automation, data handling, and image processing
  • Help in the CAD and electronic design of parts or modules for lightsheet microscopes
  • Perform computer hardware and software troubleshooting (e.g. drivers, software installation/troubleshooting, PCI card installation, etc.)

What You'll Bring

Essential –

  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in engineering, instrumentation, robotics, electronics, or optics
  • 4 or more years of experience in Python, ideally for hardware control
  • Experience and deep understanding of low-level coding in C and C++
  • General engineering knowledge and skills (CAD design, 3D printing, optics, etc.)
  • Strong software engineering skills with ideally significant experience writing code for hobby projects or open-source software
  • Hands-on experience with digital and analog electronics for instrumentation (microcontroller, DACs, etc.)
  • Any tangible ‘extra-curricular’ evidence of exceptional abilities in the disciplines above, such as hobby projects in robotics, electronics, optics, etc. are extremely welcome
  • Collaborative spirit and teamwork skills are absolutely essential!

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub requires all employees, contractors, and interns, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster vaccine dose, if eligible, by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated or obtain a booster dose because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.

Compensation

  • Associate Engineer = $68,000 - $93,500
  • Engineer I = $88,000 - $121,000
  • Engineer II = $100,000 - $137,500

What We Provide

  • Resources to disrupt and innovate at the frontiers of our knowledge of biology and disease
  • A collegial and collaborative environment consisting of diverse expertise
  • Existing collaborations within CZ Biohub: Technology Platforms (Bioengineering, Computational Microscopy, Data Science, Genomic Sequencing, Mass Spectrometry/Proteomics), and Research Group Leaders
  • Access to collaborators, resources and facilities at our three partner universities (Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco) and at partner organizations in the Bay Area and beyond
  • Competitive compensation and benefits commensurate with experience
