About the role

What are we looking for? We’re looking for someone who is a real team player, proactive, willing to step out of their comfort zone, and, above all else, is keen to develop their legal career at a really exciting business, with a collaborative culture.

What types of work will I get involved in? The role will see you getting stuck in from day one on a whole host of commercial matters. This includes data privacy, intellectual property, outsourcing agreements, SaaS agreements, and more. In addition, you will support the rest of the legal team in advising the business on compliance, marketing, disputes, and general legal strategy.

Who will I work with? You will report into the Senior Legal Counsel, but are also likely to work closely with other Legal Counsel and the Director of Legal on certain matters. You will have direct contact with people across all teams and levels of the business, from customer service agents to the C-Suite.

Learning and development opportunities. As a key member of a growing legal team (currently four), you will benefit from close working relationships and plenty of opportunities for learning and development. Life at Motorway is fast-paced, but we have a strong team culture of growth as a team and as individuals. All of the lawyers in the team have backgrounds working in private practice in the City and are keen to ensure that the right candidate for this role receives the benefit of proper supervision and opportunities to get involved in work that interests them. Ultimately, we want you to be able to thrive in an environment where you feel that you have control over your career.

Requirements

  • UK-qualified solicitor with ideally 1 - 2 years PQE. This is just a guide and we will consider applications from all candidates who meet the role requirements and who are a good fit.
  • Have trained at either a reputable law firm or in-house, preferably within a tech business or VC-backed scale-up.
  • You will ideally have some experience in at least one of the following areas: (a) data privacy, (b) commercial contracts drafting, (c) intellectual property, (d) disputes, (e) marketing, or (f)  hosted software agreements.
  • Willing to roll up your sleeves and take on challenges outside of your traditional area of expertise.
  • Willing to tackle routine document drafting and negotiation and, at times, more complex drafting points (with supervision).
  • A strong communicator, able to explain complex issues in a clear way.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport at all levels and work collaboratively within a team.
  • Adaptable and are capable of thinking on your feet.
  • Proactive and always think of potential solutions, not just potential problems.
  • You want to have your voice heard and share your ideas about how the team grows.
  • You are ambitious and keen to learn.

Benefits

  • A competitive salary.
  • Stock options
  • Annual learning budget with access to an Audible subscription and hundreds of books and online lessons.
  • BUPA health insurance.
  • Life assurance / death-in-service benefit.
  • Great salary sacrifice pension scheme.
  • Enhanced maternity/paternity leave.
  • Hybrid working with the option to work from anywhere for a month per year.
  • Top spec M1 MacBook Pro and accessories.
  • Regular social events.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Motorway car leasing scheme.
  • The chance to join a rapidly growing, revenue-generating startup and build products that will change an industry.
