Snapshot

The Google DeepMind legal team is looking for an adept and enthusiastic Legal Counsel to work closely with our policy, safety and research teams to help advise on and develop the regulatory landscape in which we operate. You will work with different parts of the business, across our applied and research teams, to make sure we are prepared for forthcoming regulatory changes that may impact our technology as well as helping to advise on processes for informing and developing legislative changes in AI across the jurisdictions in which we operate. You will also work closely with other members of the Google DeepMind and Google legal teams and with outside counsel when needed.

The role

  • Advising on how existing and draft AI-related legislation impacts different parts of the Google DeepMind business, across various jurisdictions (with a focus on UK/EU/US); identifying and analysing gaps for development of future regulations.
  • Working closely with the policy team to prepare responses to public consultations relevant to Google DeepMind (including on draft regulations, White Paper/standards consultations, calls for evidence).
  • Researching and advising on international governance structures and institutions (including regulators); advising internal stakeholders on engagement with such institutions.
  • Partnering with product and research teams to design and implement best practices in areas such as data ingestion, safety evaluations, privacy, competition and security.
  • Advising senior management on risks associated with product launches and AI research direction and presenting options to mitigate or eliminate those risks.
  • Considering existing and forthcoming regulatory regimes for AI technology and advising on implications for Google DeepMind research and products, and associated compliance. Engaging with external stakeholders around these areas as needed.
  • Identifying and advising on legal considerations around data and dataset usage (e.g. IP, licensing, privacy, policy, and governance considerations). 
  • Working with cross-functional stakeholders to advise on opportunities, issues and risks relating to the current and future AI regulatory landscape; educating the business on implications of forthcoming regulations.
  • Considering liability regimes for AI technology that exist and may arise from future regulations and advising on implications for Google DeepMind.
  • Working with our policy team to develop positions regarding regulation and to navigate the regulatory development, amendment and opposition process in the UK/US/EU government.
  • Advising on lobbying restrictions and requirements.

About you

In order to set you up for success as a Legal Counsel at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • You are very organised, accustomed to working at a fast pace and juggling many different tasks. You are proactive, taking the initiative when needed.
  • You have experience of acting as a thought partner with policy and/or governance teams in emerging tech environments.
  • You are adept at balancing legal, cultural and business demands alongside the political landscape to produce practical, solution-focused advice.

  • You enjoy variety and have a get-stuck-in mentality - no task is too big or too small.
  • You are resourceful and enjoy managing your own work and projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in private practice and/or in-house.
  • Qualified solicitor in England and Wales (preferred).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior in-house experience working with legal and policy teams at a technology company and/or within government.
  • Interest or experience in innovative technology, including in the field of AI research or deployment of machine learning systems, across a wide variety of applications and products, to benefit humanity.
