This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

The Role

As Lead Waste Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that your behaviour promotes the safety, health and welfare of yourself and your colleagues, as well as actively promoting UKAEA’s values, championing a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion. 

Leading strategic decision making, governance and assurance activities with respect to waste management during the characterisation, design, operation, re-purposing and decommissioning of UKAEA assets (such as the JET estate). 

The role involves tritium research and exposure with radiological and nuclear Materials. 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical competence for waste planning, quantification, establishing the nature and complexity of waste, radiometric determinations, review and validation of data, waste route selection and consignment. 
  • Through positive interaction with internal and external stakeholders (such as the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and relevant disposal sites), create a Waste Management Strategy which aligns with industry best practice, delivers value for money and supports the development of commercial and scientific opportunities in anticipation of future industry requirements. 
  • Ensure the Waste Management Strategy can be effectively delivered through supporting the building of a high performing, engaged, empowered and diverse programme team, as well as acting as Contract Project Manager for ASWs and/or procurement of specialist waste services. 
  • Using specialist knowledge, lead the definition of technical requirements and standards at a programme and project level and ensure correct implementation of waste management activities within scope, schedule, cost and risk. 
  • Review and present waste reports completed by the project team for clients and/or senior management to ensure legal compliance and liability reduction. 
  • Represent and promote TFC and the wider organisation’s innovative offerings and technical specialisms both internally and externally at high-profile events. 
  • Work in accordance with UKAEA policy and undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties requested by your manager. 

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent level in relevant STEM subject with demonstratable engineering experience. 
  • Proven experience of waste management within a nuclear or highly regulated industry. 
  • Experience working on major projects as a technical lead and contract manager. 
  • Certified Radioactive Waste Advisor (RWA) or good demonstration of competencies towards this accreditation or Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) or good demonstration of competencies towards this accreditation.
  • Working knowledge of waste disposal sites and their corresponding waste acceptance criteria. 
  • Demonstratable experience in strategy and planning. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to constructively interact with a variety of stakeholders at all levels of the business. 
  • Demonstrably proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Able to work with large data sets and complex formulas.
