The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design of systems and sub-systems, including boring machine parts, support systems, support system equipment, passenger/construction vehicles, and tunnel infrastructure
- Act as the go-to expert for mechanical design projects, providing guidance and direction to team members
- Utilize judgment, hand calculations, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools to develop and communicate design solutions effectively
- Oversee project schedules to ensure timely completion from conception to implementation. Maintain and communicate project timelines to stakeholders and related teams, highlighting any changes promptly
- Continuously evaluate how individual systems fit into the broader operational framework, ensuring design choices align with overarching needs and future developments
- Ensure all systems comply with relevant regulations, including MSHA, OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and Class 1 Division 2 Hazardous Location standards
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in the tunneling, construction, or related industries
- Proven experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and FEA tools
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a track record of innovative solutions
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Comprehensive understanding of industry standards and safety regulations
- Exceptional communication and leadership abilities, with experience in guiding and mentoring engineering teams
Preferred Qualifications:
- High level of proficiency in machine design
- Knowledgeable in mechatronics, mechanism design, fluid power system concepts and design, dynamics, material selection, testing methods, and common machining and fabrication processes
