Location: Flexible (Sydney) - This role offers the flexibility to work from home, within proximity to an office location.
The Role
GoPro is looking for an exceptional Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to drive innovation in motorcycle helmet technology. Based trackside at Sydney Motorsport Park, this role offers a unique opportunity to develop cutting-edge, tech-enabled helmets in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.
This hybrid position balances hands-on collaboration with our world-class engineering team at headquarters with the flexibility of remote work. You’ll be involved from the earliest stages of product development, applying your expertise to concept development, feasibility analysis, design, prototyping, validation, manufacturing and management of vendors.
This role requires strong technical leadership. You’ll take ownership of projects from top to bottom, working closely with both internal and external partners to ensure designs meet cost, schedule, reliability, thermal, and regulatory requirements. Your ability to generate clear documentation and test plans will be essential in confirming product performance.
Success in this role demands deep experience with state-of-the-art CAD and analysis tools to design components for high-volume production, primarily using injection-molded plastics. Just as important as technical ability is the capacity to collaborate across disciplines, contributing to complex product decisions with a team of engineers, designers, and external partners. The ideal candidate is not only a highly capable engineer but also a strong communicator and generous team player who thrives in a dynamic, innovative environment.
This is an opportunity to shape the future of motorcycle helmet technology. If you’re ready to push the boundaries of engineering and design, we want to hear from you.
What You Will Do
- Drive and support the mechanical architecture, development and analysis for new products
- Be responsible for the overall design, analysis, documentation and functional validation of mechanical components and assemblies
- Conduct and participate in mechanical engineering evaluation and test to validate the robustness and proper performance of new products
- Collaborate with internal and external teams (i.e. suppliers, partners, ID, PDM, manufacturing, operations, quality, tooling, etc.) to ensure the successful development and launch of new products
- Contribute to the development of mechanical tooling and production part qualification (i.e. first-article inspections, manufacturing process capabilities (Cp/Cpk), measurement gage repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R), material certifications, etc.)
- Mentor and provide support to mechanical and cross functional team members
- Utilize best-in-class tools to develop innovative mechanical solutions to highly complex problems
Skills We’re Excited About
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) with 12+ years of relevant experience in mechanical and/or product design development, ideally in consumer electronics
- Expertise using state-of-the-art CAD and analysis tools, including NX, SolidWorks and Rhino, to create mechanical designs, primarily consisting of injection-molded plastic, and other relevant materials.
- Extensive understanding of DFM principles for injection molded, plastic design, including validation processes, and FEA top optimize designs
- Experience designing FEA, CDM and thermal simulations, and designing around the results
- Experience creating MCOs for PCB/FPC design and working directly with EE team members
- Experience engineering within a highly regulated industry; adhering to functional and safety standards
- Self-starter with a bias for action, comfortable taking initiative and finding creative solutions in a dynamic, startup-like setting. Experience in a startup environment is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a range of engineering projects, both internally and with 3rd parties, delivering productive outcomes and meeting deadlines in a timely manner.
- Strong knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and performing statistical tolerance analysis
- A solid understanding of Lean and Agile processes for hardware products
- Skilled communicator, able to move between spoken, written and visual communication with ease
- Ability to work cross-functionally with strong interpersonal skills
- Willingness to travel internationally
Bonus Points For
- Enthusiasm for and/or experience in automotive engineering
- Expertise designing manufacturable plastic parts with organic 3D geometry and class-A surfaces
- Experience working on wearable products, particularly head-mounted
- Experience with acoustic products
- Experience designing products which include carbon fibre and/or fabrics
