Background
Schmidt Futures is seeking a Senior Frontend Engineer to lead a one-year immersive media project with a partner climate nonprofit. This position will lead frontend development for a technology and data solution to advance climate initiatives, with a particular focus on leveraging 3D, Virtual Reality (VR), or Extended Reality (XR) technologies for climate data visualization. Responsibilities include technical leadership as well as mentorship for early-career technologists in the Technologists for Global Transformation (TGT) program. This full-time, remote role with occasional travel to New York or within the US offers a unique opportunity to drive impact in climate-tech. This role is for a lead engineer to develop innovative solutions that leverage emerging technologies to drive climate impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead frontend engineering on a full-stack application, overseeing early-career PM and junior engineers on a climate data project.
- Design and develop a frontend application with advanced data visualization capabilities using 3D, VR, or XR technologies.
- Contribute to mentoring high-caliber early-career technologists from the TGT program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep expertise in frontend software engineering, cloud infrastructure architecture, and modern software development practices.
- Proficiency in modern languages such as Python and JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Experience as lead engineer on early-stage technical projects, with a lean startup mindset for rapid prototyping and iterative development.
- Creativity and a strong interest in designing compelling, interactive data visualizations
Requirements
- 5-10 years of experience building, designing, and implementing frontend architecture with modern stacks.
- Previous experience with data visualization or analysis tools, ideally with climate, scientific, or time-series data
- Visual, graphic or digital design experience
- Prior experience building 3D, AR, or VR technology
- Entrepreneurial mindset with a bias toward action and comfort in ambiguous environments.
- Passion for social impact work and leveraging technology to address global challenges.
