About the role
The Lead Data Engineer plays a crucial role within the Data Services team, leading Data Delivery sub-teams to serve Hirer and Marketplace data for Analytics, Machine Learning, and Reverse ETL processes. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, this role collaborates closely with the Data Solution Designer to establish reusable data products and improve data skills across business. You enable core data engineering lifecycle making it critical that you advocate for the sound principles of robust data architecture and right solutions that balance speed to market with long term cost, maintainability, scalability, and security.

Delivery
- Partner with key internal customers to understand their use cases and translate them into technical specifications and scalable implementation.
- Lead delivery and operation of datamarts & other data assets, along with the data processing pipelines and orchestration to deliver them.
- Strong analytical skills to identify patterns, trends in data, and data quality issues.
Technology
- Hands-on development and operational support duties alongside other data engineers.
- Ongoing ownership of solutions you build to ensure they remain fit for purpose, meet customer needs, meet technology health metrics, and align with Data Architecture, Security and Data management guidelines.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Minimum 5 years of technical leadership experience
- Experience with coaching and mentoring to grow skills and capabilities of engineers
- Understanding needs of customers, capturing requirements and designing solutions
- Good stakeholder management and communication
- Agile project management
- Big data processing systems (eg Spark, Hadoop)
- Cloud-based analytic data technology (ideally AWS)
- Advanced SQL and deep understanding of database technology
- Building data pipelines / ETL / workflow orchestration
- Developing datamarts and data warehouses
Other Skills and Experience
- Facilitating group workshops, planning sessions, retrospectives
- Experience with goal setting and prioritisation using frameworks like OKRs, roadmaps, etc.
- Experience using “DevOps” practices: including ownership of deployments, infrastructure, system administration, monitoring, and operations
- Develop clean code using current practices like CI/CD, TDD, pair programming
- Experience supporting AI/ML model development, feature engineering, and model deployment
- Physical, logical, dimensional data modelling
