About the team and position

In today’s world, data is king and this is the team with all the data. If you’re excited about understanding complex data sets from disparate sources, this is the team for you. Our data science and analytics team automates everything Carvana does from modeling consumer behavior to understanding how to make our users’ lives better. 

Our Data Engineering team is the bouncer of Carvana’s data – and we have no qualms about tossing out the riff-raff.  Our team partners with various internal stakeholders – from marketing to data science to engineering – to help Carvana become a strong, data-driven company.

What you’ll be doing

As a Lead Data Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between our system infrastructure and data strategy. You'll have the opportunity to learn, innovate, and grow alongside a highly skilled and supportive team on projects that will help shape Carvana's future. Your responsibilities will include:

• Using cutting-edge technologies such as Python, Databricks, and Cloud platforms to build robust data pipelines that transform raw data into meaningful and actionable insights.
• Managing and transforming structured and semi-structured data across multiple data platforms including SQL Server, AWS S3, Databricks Delta Tables, and Snowflake.
• Developing a deep understanding of data flows in our systems to contribute to problem-solving, ensure data integrity, and optimize the performance of data stores and ETL processes.
• Architecting, designing, and prototyping data solutions to support business strategies and deliver significant business value.
• Engaging with cross-functional project teams involving data scientists, product engineers, and analysts to achieve common objectives.
• Working closely with Product and Analytics leaders to define business intelligence needs and translate them into technical requirements.
• Orchestrate and implement efficient processes and tasks for integrating large, diverse datasets from various sources.

What you should have

• Extensive experience with SQL and at least one programming language such as Python, R, or Scala for data processing tasks.
• A solid understanding of data integration concepts, data modeling, business intelligence, data warehousing, big data handling techniques, and cloud-based data solutions.
• Enthusiasm for performance tuning, process optimization, and continuous improvement (who doesn't love efficiency!).
• A forward-thinking mindset with the ability to anticipate how future company evolution may impact today's processes.
• Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn new subject areas/technologies. Unafraid of diving into unknown territories with a strong desire to grow through challenging work and exposure to new technologies.
• Self starter and a commitment to staying updated with industry best practices and emerging technologies.
• Excellent cross team communication skills

What we’d love you to have (Nice-to-haves)

• Proficiency in working with Snowflake Data Warehouse is a definite plus. Your experience with this cloud-based platform will be invaluable for our data management and analytics strategies.
• Familiarity with data visualization tools like Tableau or Sigma.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum/Kanban Jira environments.
• Skilled in AI, Chat GPT, Copilot tools, and prompt engineering techniques to understand complex development processes and facilitate innovative problem-solving strategies.
