POSITION SUMMARY
Our Team seeks to welcome a highly experienced Laser Engineer with a strong foundation in laser design, characterization, and system support. We will appreciate a teammate that has fundamental knowledge of optics and product development; is excellent at working in a multi-disciplinary environment and can efficiently communicate with both engineers and scientists. We hope that you will help us bring our world-changing technology to life with integrity and passion that matches ours.
Requirements
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Typically, you will be entrusted with:
- Hands-on operations, maintenance, and optimization of high performing laser systems needed for critical-path execution of the development of quantum computing and sensing portfolios. This individual will be expected to ensure the availability of critical light for these development activities through the maturation and innovation of the hardware, software, and operation procedures associated with these laser systems.
- Constructive collaboration with physicists and optical, electrical, mechanical, software, and systems engineers to support all aspects of our laser sub-systems’ development and operation. This begins with synthesis of sub-system level requirements gathered from our atomic physics Team and will lead the modeling, design, assembly, and testing of advanced laser systems across the company’s product lines.
- Managing and advancing our relationships with external laser vendors. This will manifest through clear communication of our requirements, interfacing preferences and could lead to co-development of more complex projects.
- Analyzing and validating laser system performance through mathematical models and experimental test.
- Supporting the development of content for proposals to external and internal customers.
- Mentoring and educating junior team members and helping the team to standardize and implement processes that boost our productivity based on our unique circumstances.
WE HOPE YOU HAVE:
- Master’s degree in atomic physics, optical physics, or other relevant engineering field and at least 5 years of relevant industry experience. Doctorate degree or higher in the same disciplines can be a substitute for experience.
- Proficiency and passion in the following Technical Categories:
- Integrating complex hardware and software into systems
- Laser systems, including diode lasers and optical cavities, Pound-Drever-Hall laser stabilization and general laser modulation techniques.
- Laser noise characterization and analysis methodology for RIN and phase noise across wide frequency bandwidth.
- Advanced laser feedback control servo design and implementation
- Acousto- and electro-optical devices, optical waveguides, integrated fiber-optical devices
- Scientific programming and/or software engineering (Python, Rust, C+)
- Fundamental understanding of laser beams and reflective and refractive optics design, including laser induced damage mechanisms and damage mitigation strategies
- Optical test equipment including power meters, polarimeters, beam profilers, spectrometers, beam pointing devices and more
- Systems engineering skills, such as gathering requirements from technical stakeholders and propagating high-level requirements to sub-systems and components
- Experience with SolidWorks, Zemax, Ansys, and analytical modeling (in e.g. Python, Matlab, or Mathematica) are highly desirable but not required.
WE HIGHLY VALUE:
- Great verbal and written communication skills to effectively share information with technical and non-technical staff
- Strong engagement and collaboration skills with constant drive for success, ownership and pride in your work
- Sense of urgency and responsibility and a true passion for attention to detail where it matters
- Open communication style and extremely positive attitude which shows through consistent daily habits
- Demonstrated problem solving skills and fast learning rate
- Capability of working with both a high degree of autonomy (taking high level goal as an input to discover and execute an optimal plan, gathering required resources to achieve the goal) and collaboratively (soliciting and incorporating input from colleagues as necessary)
