Job purpose

Janes is looking for a Land Platforms Analyst focusing on Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) within the Land Warfare team. The purpose of the role is to become the lead subject matter expert on UGV technology, authoring insight and analysis and tracking the emergence and development of new technology in this sector. The analyst will work within the wider Land Warfare team collecting open-source research and data on UGVs and associated technology, creating, updating, and maintaining the UGV portion of the Janes Land Warfare Platforms: Logistics, Support & Unmanned content set.

How you will contribute to Janes

  • Be a part of the Land Warfare team and work closely with peer subject matter experts (SMEs) to research and author detailed profiles of military land platforms and equipment, focusing on UGV technologies.
  • Be responsible for authoring and maintaining the UGV dataset, consisting of technical profiles for all military-oriented UGVs.
  • Challenge extant content to always strive for improved granularity, coverage, and quality of Janes UGV profiles.
  • Author news stories and features, bespoke and regular analyses, consulting studies and customer briefings on the subject of UGV technologies. This will therefore be an amazing opportunity to become known within the industry and establish yourself as a leading SME working under the Janes brand name.
  • Work closely with the other Land Warfare SMEs to peer review their products and deliverables, as well as to collaborate on shared research projects as required.

Requirements

  • Experience working in an analytical role (preferably with UGV technologies or adjacent industries) is a huge advantage; however, training will be provided for the successful candidate judged to have potential.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in war studies, international relations, history, engineering, or a peripherally relevant discipline as can be justified by the candidate. Candidates are encouraged to justify their background in their cover letters. Janes also welcomes applications from candidates with relevant work experience, including relevant military service, in lieu of formal educational qualifications.
  • A passion for military technology and ability to conduct deep research into hard-to-find subject areas is a must. The candidate may have previous working experience in OSINT, military-relevant research (such as within industry or a think tank), radio/data communications, robotics and/or autonomy desirable, but this is not strictly necessary.
  • Good understanding of military technology, particularly those relating to unmanned vehicles, autonomy and AI, sensors, and communications would be an important asset.
  • High standard of written English with demonstrable ability to communicate complex and technical concepts to the average reader is essential.
  • Willingness to work independently, to take initiative and ownership of a young but important product and subject to create a world-leading content set.
  • Ability to extract technical details from OSINT research including imagery and the ability to quickly find and summarise the relevant facts from a variety of documents and sources.
  • Ability to recognise and consider the bigger picture and the implications of the research topic within it.
  • Proactive self-starter and self-learner approach.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrable possession of a methodical, self-organised and action-oriented approach.
  • Knowledge of any foreign languages – particularly Russian, Chinese and Farsi – would be an asset but is not strictly necessary.
