Contact Energy is hiring a

Junior Market Insight Analyst

Wellington, New Zealand
Full-Time

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

Reporting to our Customer Growth Manager, in this newly created role as Junior Market Insight Analyst you’ll pick up a load of our data and look at what’s happening with acquisition and retention across all our products. This will give you a central role in not just reporting on and supporting current campaigns, but also using what you learn to help the Marketing team build future initiatives. Supported by three more senior analysts who’ve been here a while, know Contact well and love what they do, you’ll have the opportunity to bring fresh perspective, insights and ideas to a part of Contact that is humming with constant change and appetite for more.

Contact has been around for 25+ years but offering energy products and energy products alone until 2017 when we launched telecommunication services. We’ve reached 100,000 broadband customers since then, reflecting New Zealanders’ increased need for connectivity, and in August 2023 extended our telco services by introducing Contact Mobile. As you might expect, the data in this space isn’t as mature as in Electricity, and a big part of your role will be ‘maturing it’, working manually a lot of the time to deliver what’s needed now while taking a future view to improve processes and set us up for success. Over time, as the data matures, we expect the role will too – you have the opportunity to shape things to come up and out of what is currently quite manual mahi, and into a pure insights role.

Ko wai koe | About you

With plenty of mahi under your belt working with big data sets, you’re all about finding truth through information and love that ‘lightbulb moment’ when the data shows you something new to share. If you’ve had experience in Telco or Electricity, we’ll be stoked, but so long as you have a genuine interest in them, we’d be happy to show you the ropes. What we can’t compromise on is (drumroll please) Excel. We’ve already mentioned the data isn’t exactly what you’d call mature … to get it into tip-top shape, you’ll need to be an absolute whiz with our old friend MS Excel. (Sorry.)

Beyond that, you have to be able to communicate data in a way that’s accessible. You’ll often be dealing with leaders and other kaimahi who don’t live and breathe data the same way you do, so you have to be able to get out of the jargon and translate complex information to be easily understood.

To deal with the big data sets, experience with one or more data querying languages (e.g., SQL, Python or R) is a big plus, and there are bonus points on offer if you can point to some top shelf data visualisations you have done previously (ideally in Power BI or Tableau).

We support our people to work how, where and when works the best. To get the most out of this role, there’s a real advantage to being either in Wellington, where you can work alongside one of our Senior Market Insight Leads, or in Auckland where some of the wider Growth team is based.

Contact is not a place you’ll stagnate. We are growing and offer superb learning and development opportunities along with a bunch of other perks like free health insurance cover, better-than-your-average leave, access to Contact Shares, a ‘Good to be Home’ annual payment toward your home set up & wellbeing, a trail-blazing parental leave policy, discounts on Contact Energy products, and more.

This ad will close automatically on Wednesday 20 November but we’re considering applications as they come in so hop to it if you're keen, or if there's something you’re curious to know first, reach out to Tash on [email protected].

Please note, only candidates with the right to live and work in New Zealand will be considered for this role.

Research shows that while men apply to jobs where they meet 60% of the criteria, women and those in underrepresented groups tend to only apply if they tick every box. We're not about box ticking, so if you think you have what it takes but don't meet everything stated above, please still get in touch. We'd love to kōrero.
