Back Market is building their first engineering team in NYC! We are looking for passionate team members to join our office of 40+ people in Union Square, and a 250+ engineering team worldwide.  This will be an iOS app engineering team to start, whose mission is to help us spread the word about refurbished tech to save the planet and your wallet at the same time.  

We are looking for an iOS Tech Lead/Manager to play a pivotal role in our strategic app-first approach to the US market. Our goal is to enhance user engagement by accelerating the development of innovative features and optimizing the overall app experience.

As the Tech Lead/Manager, you will be the leader of our first US-based engineering team comprised of you, two other iOS engineers, and two backend engineers.  You will be at the forefront of our mobile engineering efforts to create an amazing US customer experience for our service offering within our mobile application. You will be instrumental in aligning, designing, and driving the architectural vision for our mobile platforms & app features as we work to be US first and app first in all that we do.  

Your expertise in native iOS platforms, combined with your ability to make strategic decisions and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, will be key to driving our mobile engineering success. You will work closely with the product manager and UX designer to ensure the right set of features, priority, and impact at velocity are being designed and delivered.  You will participate in the Back Market mobile community, partnering with others to continuously improve our practices. 

What you will do

  • Lead the team in delivering high-quality iOS user experiences, setting benchmarks for excellence and scalability, thereby propelling our app's capabilities and product cycle velocity.
  • Elevate the development of advanced app-first features, by emphasizing iOS platform innovation, bridges, and actively building expertise within the mobile engineering community at Back Market.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team of iOS & Android engineers, as well as peers from various disciplines (SRE, Backend, Frontend, CyberSec, Data, etc.), to foster a culture of technical excellence and shared knowledge.
  • Take ownership & anticipating significant technical projects, managing dependencies both internally and externally, to realize the engineering and product visions.
  • Drive the user experience forward by partnering with Product Managers & Designers, implementing intuitive UI animations, transitions, and accessibility features, while ensuring adherence to our Design System.
  • Architect robust and efficient code patterns, by leveraging the latest iOS technologies, while maintaining a commitment to the app architecture principles, like modularity and dependency injection.
  • Advocate for efficient testing methodologies, from unit and UI tests to cutting-edge end-to-end practices, ensuring the highest quality and reliability of the features developed.
  • Monitor app performance meticulously, utilizing tools like Datadog and Crashlytics to track UI and core functionality, and implement strategies to prevent regressions.

Required skills and experience

  • 5+ years of relevant and broad mobile engineering experience
  • Strong technical leadership with multiple teams, ability to build and drive mobile engineering vision & engineering excellence 
  • Technical expertise in building and scaling native apps on iOS (B2C), with high traffic, weekly features delivery & resolving complex issues
  • Experience successfully operating in a multi-module architecture
  • High knowledge and advocacy of Apple guidelines, Swift, and mobile platform frameworks.
  • Proven track record for mentoring and developing engineers
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences

This position has an estimated annual base salary range of $180,000 to $220,000, plus opportunities for equity. Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to demonstrated skill set, years and depth of relevant experience, and some role-dependent factors.
