Interventional Radiology Tech I

Under general supervision, the Interventional Radiology Technologist assists the Radiologist with all aspects of the performance of highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the Department of Interventional Radiology.

  • Answers telephone inquiries of a technical nature from physicians or hospital personnel in other area of the hospital while maintaining good phone etiquette

  • Maintains a safe working environment: Keeps work area clean and free of hazards. Alerts appropriate resource of faulty or broken equipment. Observes all safety guidelines. Recognizes and reports unsafe acts

  • Maintains appropriate quantities of medical stock for the department.

  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice including maintaining current licensure and completing educational requirements.

  • Understands his/her role in maintaining medication security to authorized personnel only.

  • Adheres to infection control guidelines: uses good handwashing technique, adheres to isolation policy, cleaning equipment between patients.

  • Assists student technologists who may rotate through the department.

  • Transports and moves patients to appropriate departments post procedure using appropriate body mechanics and safety precautions. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of safe patient handling devices.

  • Follows Universal Protocol by using two patient identifiers prior to working with patient.

  • Provides patient and family with information/instructions regarding procedure, evaluating barriers to understanding.

  • Determines need for translation services or communication aides and arranges for the appropriate resources to meet these needs.

  • Evaluates patient’s medical history and clinical data.

  • Completes the necessary paperwork and notes discrepancies according to departmental procedure.



Department Specific Competencies

  • Ensures a smooth flow of patients to the Interventional Radiology suites.

  • Assists with and/or gives approval for add-on procedures when requested by the scheduling department or MD's office. If necessary communicates with radiologist and obtains all pertinent information to document in scheduling notes.

  • Assists the Radiologist with the consenting of patient.

  • Practices aseptic technique, isolation and infection control procedures and prevents cross contamination at all times.

  • Chooses, prepares and administers intravenous contrast media under supervision of the radiologist using proper protocols.

  • Prepares the room, trays and patient according to physician preference following Universal Protocol in Interventional Radiology, and any other areas requiring assistance of Interventional Technologist.

  • Demonstrates competency and proficiency in proper sequencing and positioning of all exams and procedures.

  • Assists the supervising physician in capturing the best projections to delineate the vascular anatomy.

  • Assists physicians utilizing ultrasound in the performance of special procedures involving aspirations, biopsies and for guidance of needle placement procedures.

  • Demonstrates competence in using specific equipment used on all exams, ie guidewires, catheters, stents, angioplasty balloons, etc

  • Demonstrates competency in the post processing of all the acquired digital runs.

  • Performs portable procedures in high stress environments includes Intensive Care Units, Surgery Suite and Emergency Room.

  • Assists and supports a new or transferred employee through a planned orientation to a specific clinical area.

  • Ensures patients knowledge of post procedural instructions.

  • Completes all associated paperwork, billing and charging.

  • Ensures upkeep and servicing of equipment in Interventional Radiology and Endovascular Suites including PM's and annual inspections

  • Assumes “on-call” work for Interventional Radiology, as scheduled. Response must be within 30 minutes of receiving call.

  • Assists the physician by preparing and passing equipment catheters, wires, instruments, manifolds/pressure monitors for each Diagnostic and Interventional procedure, including but not limited to Kyphoplasties, angioplasties, stent implantations, embolizations, and thrombectomies, including neuro, brachial or radial approaches.

Compensation Range

$42.24 - $66.97 / Hour
