Under general supervision, the Interventional Radiology Tech assists Radiologist with all aspects of the performance of specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the Department of Interventional Radiology.

Follows Universal Precautions.Demonstrates knowledge of Radiation Safety, Material Safety Data Sheet and Fire/Safety policies and procedures. Is able to identify where information manuals are located.Follows universal Protocol by using two patient identifiers prior to performing the exam, using pre-op/pre procedure verification check list, site marked with the physician’s initials (physician performing procedure) and using “Time Out”.Demonstrates competence with specific equipment used on all diagnostic and interventional procedures performed.Assists the supervising physician in capturing the best projections to delineate the vascular anatomy.Demonstrates competency in providing monitoring equipment used during exams.Reports equipment malfunctions to manager or lead.Corrects supplies are charged and tech notes are written at the completion of each exam in RIS.Understands his/her role in maintaining medication security to authorized personnel only.Provides healthcare services in own job category to all age groups.Demonstrates competence in interpersonal relationships to all age groups.Prepares the room, trays and patient according to physician preference following Universal Protocol in Interventional Radiology, and any other areas requiring assistance of Interventional Technologist.Assists the Radiologist with the consenting of patient.Ensures patients understanding of the procedure.Maintains constant communication with patient during procedure.Ensures patients knowledge of post procedural instructions.Demonstrates competency and proficiency in proper sequencing and positioning of all exams and procedures.Works well with minimal supervision.Utilizes Hospital Information System (HIS), Radiology Information System (RIS) and PACS.Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (BPI projects, task forces, etc) when requested.Demonstrates confidentiality using own password and all patient care systems.Answers telephone inquiries of a technical nature from physicians or hospital personnel in other area of the hospital while maintaining good phone etiquetteKeeps assigned work areas clean and office/medical supplies stocked. Reorders through appropriate personnel when supplies are low.Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned.Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice including maintaining current licensure and completing educational requirements.Assumes “on-call” work for Interventional Radiology, as scheduled. Response must be within 30 minutes of receiving call.

Department Specific Competencies

Demonstrate the ability to choose, prepare and administer opaque contrast media under supervision of the radiologist using proper protocols.
