Cruise - University is hiring an

Intern, Machine Learning Engineer, Prediction

San Francisco, United States
Internship

We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.

We’re building the world’s most advanced, self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

Cruisers have the opportunity to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the forefront of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's an opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.

If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, join us.

The Collision Risk team within the broader Prediction/AI team is looking for an Intern to help with building and improving novel machine learned representations to capture the primary risk of an agent colliding with the AV. This includes trajectory prediction, capturing uncertainties, anomaly detection and multi-modal predictions amongst other things for dynamic agents such as pedestrians, bikes, vehicles, etc. These are critical safety pieces for the AV as they allow the Planning and Controls stack to determine the optimal path that the AV should take to avoid any collisions. The intern will work closely with senior Machine Learning Engineers and Applied Research Scientists to come up with novel ML ideas, train and evaluate various modeling hypotheses and land these on the AV to deliver on-road impact.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

  • Work with the Collision Risk team to brainstorm, prototype, train and evaluate modeling hypotheses, implement and eventually land on the AV, novel collision risk models that address current and future road issues or driving capabilities.
  • Contribute to the team's knowledge by reading latest research papers in the area, bringing their own expertise and developing and maintaining good documentation of research plans with daily or weekly progress towards internship project goals.
  • Learn and become familiar with the Cruise AV stack and understand the complexities of AV software development and Machine Learning pipelines.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly discussion sessions, brainstorms and reviews of projects underway in the broader Collision Risk and Prediction teams.
  • Work with partner teams such as Perception and Planning on experimenting with novel signals and integration ideas to improve on-road AV behavior in specific challenging cases.

WHAT YOU MUST HAVE:

  • Working knowledge and experience with common ML platforms such as PyTorch and corresponding basic language mastery of Python.
  • Good general software development skills including writing solid maintainable and well-tested code. Experience with C++ a plus.
  • Experience with building and maintaining new datasets or augmenting current datasets with new signals to solve current problems.
  • Knowledge of and experience with SQL and BigQuery a plus.
  • Should be able to learn internal frameworks around PyTorch for rapid scalability of training pipelines and experiments.

BONUS POINTS!

  • Enrolled in and pursuing a Masters or PhD Degree in Computer Science with a strong emphasis in Machine Learning

The salary range for this position is $28.00 - $68.00/hour. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
