Interconnection Manager

The Role
We are looking for an Interconnection Manager to work internally and externally to ensure a smooth interconnection process for Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). You will play a key role in advising and presenting recommendations to executive senior management about critical issues related to potential commercial transactions, long-term and short-term planning issues, and/or real-time operational issues. You will report to our Senior Director, Project Management, and be based in the Northeast region of the US (preferably NY) or California. 

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Act as primary interface and establish strong working relationships with ISOs, RTOs, Transmission Service Providers and Utilities.
  • Utilize expert knowledge of generation interconnection process and tariffs, interconnection agreements and requirements, including a sound working knowledge of the process from the initial interconnection request through permission/acceptance to operate in parallel with the electric utility grid.
  • Act as the main liaison with senior management, Business Development, Engineering, and Project Management leads on matters relating to interconnection, pre-construction, and engineering progress, scope, and schedule.
  • Identify optimal strategies for interconnecting microgrid projects to the electric utility grid.
  • Oversee utility interconnection studies so they are reasonable and timely.
  • Inform the company and project teams of significant developments and opportunities relating to interconnections.
  • Attend and participate in meetings and conferences on engineering and technical issues (i.e. ISOs stakeholder meetings, working groups and conferences) and report key findings.
  • Conduct early-stage diligence with Business Development, Engineering, and Project Management teams to understand the utility process, timeline, and acceptance criteria.
  • Manage the preparation and submission of interconnection application packages including all applications as needed for all grid tied projects, consulting with external consultants, as needed.
  • Monitor, track, and report ongoing interconnection application package statuses and respond to additional informational requests from grid operators and utilities in a timely manner.
  • Assist in transmission analyses including preparing and managing preliminary interconnection cost estimates and timelines.
  • Represent Scale Microgrids with external project stakeholders including landowners, permitting agencies, transmission providers, and at public hearings and government and community events, as needed.
  • Lead coordination calls as needed to keep projects on schedule, with the appropriate Utility for each grid connected project. 
  • Conduct cursory reviews of coordination studies, short circuit analysis, protection settings, and commissioning requirements against the Utilities published specifications.
  • Attend relevant ISO stakeholder and state regulatory meetings.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor's degree or more advanced in relevant engineering disciplines is preferred.
  • 7+ years of engineering/land development/interconnection experience (preferably with 3+ years in solar, battery storage and/or generator sites)
  • Knowledge of FERC and NERC standards related to transmission and interconnections.
  • Knowledge of electricity market rules (day ahead, real time, capacity, ancillary services, etc.).
  • Extensive experience in navigating the California and Northeast utilities and ISO interconnection processes and tasks (i.e. CAISO, NYISO, PJM).
  • Able to identify potential interconnection risks early in the project development phase and provide mitigations/alternatives to reduce interconnection costs and timelines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in multiple grid operators’ and utility jurisdictions simultaneously.
  • Experience working in Google Earth.
  • Responsive with internal and external teams, with a high degree of ownership and accountability.
  • Skill at creating, summarizing and presenting information logically for executive decision-making.
  • Energetic and aggressive in pursuing opportunities, resolving problems and overcoming challenges.
  • Results-oriented with the ability to work independently, with light supervision, in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Desire to learn and assist with creatively solving challenges.
