Scope of Position:

Schedule will include Supervising Instructor Guard shifts as well as Instructor Guard shifts as required for relief.

Note: We are a 7 day a week operation and shifts may be scheduled between 5 am – 9 pm in order to meet operational demands.

Position Description:

  • To safeguard life and prevent accidents at the County swimming pools and to teach swimming programs and promote good relations with patrons of the facilities.
  • Responsible for safety supervision, class management, and risk management at the swimming classes.
  • Work according to Health and Safety Act, Lifesaving Society Standards, and Norfolk County Policies.
  • Provide instruction to individuals and groups in organized swimming classes
  • Prepare lesson plans, organize equipment, teach and evaluate swim classes in accordance with the standards established by the Lifesaving Society and Norfolk County. Classes include but not limited to aquafitness and mobility classes.
  • Complete all documentation related to class instruction such as but not limited to attendance, worksheets, and completing report cards.
  • Perform lifeguard duties during recreational swims, rental groups, and other aquatics programs.  Ensure compliance with Regulation 565 and Norfolk County policies and procedures including performing rescues and first aid when required.
  • Ability to use critical thinking and react in an emergency situation which may involve first aid or a building emergency.
  • Assist with special pool programs and special County aquatic events/water safety initiatives that are held at the pool or at other locations
  • Attend and participate in aquatic division meetings and in-house training sessions that are organized by the Supervisor, Aquatics
  • Participate in team building with all staff.
  • Complete any necessary reports and documentation associated with pool operation to include but not limited to: shift reports in the pool log book, incident reports, pool fouling reports, water readings, etc.
  • Provide supervision and direction to staff when in the role of Supervising Instructor Guard
  • Accept and process payments for swim programs, pass cards, and general admissions
  • Handle customer service inquiries professionally
  • Help to maintain the pool facility by performing regulated water tests, equipment checks, cleaning and sanitization duties in accordance to Ministry of Health and Norfolk County policies.  Report all problems to Supervisor, Aquatics
  • Shifts may include days, evenings and weekends and will depend on facility and class/program schedules
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatics

Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:                                                                                         

  • Current Lifesaving Society Instructor status.
  • Current National Lifeguard Award
  • Current Standard First Aid, C.P.R., A.E.D.
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification
  • Basic aquafit teaching experience of shallow and deep water classes is required.
  • Aquafitness Certification through CALA or Water ART or willing to obtain certification

Those qualified to recertify the above qualifications prior to date of hire, would be given consideration.

  • Over one year, up to and including two years’ experience, to become familiar with scope of position, or equivalent previous experience
  • The successful candidate must be able to complete and pass Norfolk County’s Aquatics Skills Screening Test as part of the hiring process
  • High 5 – Principles of Healthy Child Development (an asset)
  • Knowledge of Perfect Mind software (an asset)

Salary:

Instructor Guard - $26.95 – $33.65 per hour

Supervising Instructor Guard - $29.64 – $37.04 per hour

Location: Annaleise Carr Aquatics Centre, and Delhi Kinsmen Pool. May be required to go to Waterford North Conservation Area and Backus Conservation Area if applicable programming is offered.
