The role:
Southpaws Specialty, Emergency & Referral Hospital is looking for a dedicated In-Patient Care Nurse to join our team as part of our surgery department. This unique role focuses primarily on delivering exceptional preoperative and postoperative care to our hospitalised surgery patients, making it a crucial part of our patient-centred approach. While your primary responsibilities will involve caring for the surgical patients in the ward, performing treatments and ensuring their comfort, you will also work alongside our skilled ECC nursing team, collaboratively providing the best possible care to all in-patients across all departments. This role involves close observation, effective communication with case owners, and prioritising inpatient care as well as being a part of the surgical team and assisting to the overall patient care across the hospital.
Key Responsibilities:
Attend morning handover and listen to updates on surgery inpatients.
Review and note any changes in patient charts during rounds.
Assist with tasks for surgery inpatients (e.g., radiographs, blood work, sedation).
Communicate patient concerns or status changes to the case owner.
Prioritise care for current hospitalised patients, ensuring timely medication and treatment.
Assist with new admissions, including labelling cages and starting IVs.
Support diagnostics and minor procedures, such as x-rays and dressing changes.
Maintain a clean and organised ward environment, including patient cages and supplies.
Prepare patients for discharge, ensuring they are clean and all equipment is properly removed or placed.
Key Requirements:
Certificate IV or equivalent qualification.
3-4 years’ experience in a similar role.
Professional and positive demeanour.
Ability to work efficiently with initiative in a fast-paced environment.
Exceptional organisational skills.
Extensive knowledge and understanding of veterinary nursing procedures.
Proficiency in monitoring anaesthesia. Primary focus on in-patient care assistance in surgery when required
Ability to work a rotating roster including a weekend rotation and on call.
