HPC Engineer and AI/ML Coordinator

We have an opening for an experienced High-Performance Computing (HPC) specialist to support Livermore Computing users, including with data science and AI/ML workflows.  You will coordinate efforts within LC to ensure that activities across the division and externally to users are well documented and communicated. This work will enable LLNL strategic applications to use the next generation of HPC systems and software frameworks. You will also serve the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program and the Institutional Computing program through assignments related to program planning, system procurements, and community engagement. This position is in Livermore Computing’s (LC) High Performance Computing Center within the Computing Principal Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will

  • Manage and provide strategic technical advice across LC teams working on various aspects of supporting AI/ML and data science, including requirements gathering, documentation, technical coordination, roadmap development, and proposal and white paper writing.
  • Interact with LC customers to understand user requirements for HPC hardware, software, and consulting resources to support simulation codes.
  • Consult with LC and ASC staff to develop and support AI/ML services for HPC systems, including user outreach, technical training, documentation, and building community.  
  • Brief LC and ASC management on progress, results, and impact of LC efforts by gathering information from users, code teams, and LC teams and researchers. 
  • Support strategic DOE Lab, vendor, and academic partnerships, partnering with LC program managers and project leaders.
  • Collaborate with project leaders to coordinate and drive planning for projects including novel hardware for testbeds, sustainability efforts for HPC software, and community engagement.
  • Subject matter expertise in HPC and AI workloads as a consultant to LC users and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computational science, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Expert knowledge of and experience with state-of-the art HPC hardware and software environments, as well as best practices in operating a complex HPC center.
  • Highly advanced ability to develop innovative concepts and to provide expert leadership, technical vision, and strategic planning in a scientific research and development environment.  
  • Substantial working effectively with all levels of DOE or other sponsors, including DoD.
  • - Substantial experience managing, leading, and supervising computer science R&D projects and teams to meet deliverables.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
  • Highly advanced experience working independently and responsively to changing priorities and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of scientific, technical, and management personnel, customers, and vendors.
  • Ability to regularly travel for meetings, training, and conferences.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Advanced degree in computational science, computer science, or related field.
  • Advanced ability and willingness to learn new advances in specific topics, expand personal expertise, and apply increased understanding to propose new technical solutions
  • .Extensive knowledge and a thorough understanding of current LLNL HPC hardware and the state of the art in HPC software environments for enabling massively parallel applications to perform efficiently at extremely large scales.
  • Anticipated Clearance Level: Ability to obtain DOE Q Clearance
