Under direct supervision, performs all steps required to process and prepare tissue slides for interpretation by the Pathologists.
Core Competencies
- Embeds, cuts, stains and cover slips microtome sections for microscopic examination.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, documents PM appropriately, makes minor repairs and immediately contacts appropriate personnel for problems requiring repairs that are more complex. Follows-up to ensure repairs are completed.
- Performs tasks required for routine and special stains according to established departmental procedure.
- Prepares cytospins and needle aspirations.
- Prepares renal biopsies for processing.
- Assists with frozen sections.
- Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories and storage.
- Labels reagents and supplies with appropriate information.
- Receives, restocks, delivers supplies, and notifies appropriate personnel of potential and/or actual stock shortages while maintaining appropriate inventory to ensure all required work can be performed.
- Performs validation of new antibodies and tests. Stores documents and slides for future reference appropriately.
- Disposes chemical and laboratory waste according to established procedures.
- Disposes of samples according to department specimen retention policy.
- Maintains quality assurance functions for the histology department.
- Demonstrates an active problem solving attitude & positive approach to all aspects of job
- Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel.
- Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.

Experience
Additional InformationTwo years or more of current and progressive histology/pathology experience.
License / Certification Requirements
ASCP registration or Canadian RT certification in Histotechnology.
Compensation Range
$33.78 - $53.46 / Hour
