We have an opening for a Health Physicist. You will provide comprehensive health physics (HP) support to various LLNL programs as well as provide support and guidance to other ES&H team members in the area of HP. This position is in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week. 

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. 

You will

  • Provide moderate to complex HP solutions to LLNL programs in specific areas of assignment including but not limited to: establishing appropriate personnel dosimetry, bioassay, and whole-body counting programs and evaluating the results of these monitoring programs; evaluating and providing radiation safety input to safety procedures and to facility, equipment, and shielding designs.
  • Anticipate, identify, and evaluate HP-related hazardous conditions and practices to protect personnel from the effects of ionizing radiation through knowledge of engineering and science. Develop, evaluate, and implement policies, procedures, codes, and standards.
  • Conduct building inspections to identify and evaluate potential hazards related to HP and provide guidance for analyzing such hazards.
  • Provide guidance to LLNL Programs on all matters related to radiation protection.
  • Provide feedback to management regarding the effectiveness of the radiation safety program in their areas of responsibility.
  • Provide oversight to the health and safety technicians on HP sampling, discipline action plan duties, and program concerns related to health physics; develop HP Discipline Action Plan (DAP) for area(s) assigned.
  • Review sample results and make applicable recommendations to the program to control associated hazards.
  • Provide selected training in radiation safety to personnel in the assigned area. Develop and present safety courses in HP or related topics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level 

  • Provide advanced HP solutions for LLNL programs in specific areas of assignment including but not limited to: establish appropriate personnel dosimetry, bioassay, and whole-body counting programs and evaluate the results of these monitoring programs; evaluate and provide radiation safety input to safety procedures and to facility, equipment, and shielding designs, and represent the organization as the technical resource on tasks and projects.
  • Respond to radiological emergencies and incidents on site, investigate incidents or accidents involving radiation and make recommendations to all levels of management to prevent a reoccurrence; provide HP solutions during audits, inspections and site verifications by internal and external agencies.
  • Mentor less experienced personnel.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, or Radiation Protection or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience in HP or a related field with comprehensive knowledge of related state and federal regulations and other consensus organizations.
  • Experience preparing safety plans and technical reports (e.g., FSPs, SARs, DAPs); conducting safety audits and inspections; successfully working potential compliance issues with program customers, and external inspectors and regulators; and providing emergency response and participation in the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiological hazards. 
  • Analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills to evaluate, interpret, negotiate, recommend and implement actions/solutions for moderately complex problems.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple moderately complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
  • Experience working independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing complex projects, and meeting schedules.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate technical information to all levels of management both internal and external to the Laboratory, including regulatory agencies and key stakeholders.
  • Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protection equipment and ability to secure and maintain certification in the Human Reliability Program (HRP) which includes:  polygraph examination; and physical and psychological assessment; and random drug and alcohol testing.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level 

  • Significant experience leading independent HP work and training, conducting gap analysis, reviewing new health and safety standards, and providing technical direction/leadership to health and safety staff on HP related matters, and providing emergency response and participation in the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiological hazards.   
  • Advanced experience in HP or a related field with thorough knowledge of related state and federal regulations and other consensus organizations.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate technical information to all levels of management both internal and external to the Laboratory, including regulatory agencies and key stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to negotiate, recommend and implement solutions to highly complex problems.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Health Physics, or another closely-related technical area.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL.  Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
