Head of Safety

This is a hybrid role based out of San Francisco or Los Angeles (West Hollywood) offices and will require you to be in office Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We are seeking a Head of Safety to lead Grindr’s work to keep our community safe from bad actors and inappropriate content, ensure we’re proactively using best practices and the best technologies to protect and serve our users, and maintain compliance with applicable legal requirements and industry standards.  

With more than 13.5 million monthly active users across virtually all countries, Grindr has become a fundamental part of the global LGBTQ+ community. As an app that often facilitates in-person interactions, safety is a unique and important consideration for us. This is especially apparent as nearly 80% of our users live outside the US, including 64 countries in which it is illegal to be gay.

In this imactful & critical role, you will work with  a dynamic team dedicated to preventing and addressing issues related to harassment, abuse, and inappropriate content. This is a unique opportunity to utilize your expertise in Trust & Safety policy and moderation operations to promote our mission of connecting the LGBTQ+ community and keeping them safe. 

What’s the job?   

  • Manage Safety Standards Definition: Own and evolve Grindr’s safety standards in partnership with our Legal and Privacy teams and other key stakeholders
  • Safety Ops & Tech Strategy and Execution: Develop & implement, with a highly cross-functional team, a global strategy to uphold these safety standards across operations/moderation, technology (including AI/ML systems), data, and product
  • External Representation: Represent the company publicly on T&S matters and engage with a wide range of external stakeholders including law enforcement, legislators and regulators, industry associations and peers, non-profit organizations, and business partners
  • Integrity of Accounts/User Activity: Lead efforts to maximize the elimination of fake accounts, spam, illegal activity and bad conduct on the platform
  • Regulatory Assessment: Partner with Legal & Privacy as needed on regulatory matters, including the evaluation of and participation in consultations and legislative impact assessments
  • Performance Monitoring:  Define & report on key performance indicators via regular audits and assessments, to identify and mitigate potential safety risks to our users and our business
  • Industry Monitoring: Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices to continually enhance user safety
  • Crisis Management: Prepare for and respond to crises that impact user trust and safety, in collaboration with our Legal, Comms, and Investor Relations teams
  • User Education: Working with Product, user research, and Grindr for Equality, help educate users globally about safe practices on the platform     

What are our Safety priorities? 

  • Protecting the need for some users to maintain anonymity 
  • Having a zero-tolerance policy on minors being on the platform 
  • Combating child sexual exploitation and preventing any such content on the platform 
  • Enforcing anti-solicitation rules
  • Eliminate fake accounts, spam, illegal activity and bad conduct on the platform

What we'll love about you  

  • Proven professional with 5+ years of experience as a Trust & Safety leader for a tech company
  • Experience developing strategy, implementing policies, operational improvements, and new products to enhance trust & safety among a large, global consumer base
  • In-depth knowledge of online safety issues, policies, and best practices especially when balancing the issues with competing internal and external priorities
  • Experience working with international issues across multiple geographies, including areas of freedom of expression, prevention of minors accessing platforms meant for adults, and user generated content.
  • Experience with content moderation, specifically around marginalized communities such as the LGBTQ community.
  • Ability to influence across the organization without direct authority
  • Comfortable making decisions in nuanced situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, including working with large data sets to identify and solve business problems.

Grindr is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This base pay range is for the U.S. and is not applicable to locations outside of the U.S. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, location, and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role will also be eligible for equity, benefits, and a company bonus program.
