Head of FHA Underwriting

The Head of FHA Underwriting is a significant leadership position that requires strong leadership, problem solving and customer service skills, and must be able to work closely and collaboratively with production, closing and servicing.  The Head of FHA Underwriting is responsible for directing the Company’s underwriting function for the FHA product line and the development and implementation of the FHA Underwriting platform, working closely with all stakeholders.  The Head of FHA Underwriting must possess deep knowledge of guidelines relating to products, have an extensive track record within FHA platforms and/or underwriting, have experience effectively leading teams and support a high service atmosphere for internal and external customers.

Leadership and Team Development:

  • Develops team goals and vision that support overall corporate goals and collaborate with all stakeholders and underwriting team to attain those goals.
  • Work with the FHA Underwriting leadership in recruiting, developing/mentoring, and retaining a diverse pool of talent.
  • Collaborate in development of clear expectations for performance and professional development of FHA Underwriting Leadership and team members.
  • Participate in regular formal and informal performance evaluations of Underwriting Leadership.
  • Facilitate training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of the team, ensuring continuous professional development.

Strategic Planning and Execution:

  • Develop in collaboration with Chief Underwriters the annual budget and staffing plans for the business unit and works jointly with FHA Leadership team in driving the group to meet and exceed its business performance metrics.
  • Monitor market trends and regulatory changes to proactively adjust strategies and policies.
  • Implement credit policy standards and provide credit policy guidance both broadly for the platform and when necessary, specific transactions.
  • Advise in the creation and application of policies and procedures supporting the underwriting function.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Develop and manage relationships with Senior HUD staff and industry partners to ensure Berkadia is represented and influential with HUD both on specific deal matters and matters that impact the industry more broadly.
  • Acts as partner with all stakeholders to identify needs, wants and objectives to align the underwriting group within the wider organization.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports and analyses to senior management and stakeholders.

Operational Excellence:

  • Work with Chief Underwriter(s) to ensure compliance with all HUD guidelines and regulations, maintaining the highest standards of underwriting quality and integrity.
  • Work with Chief Underwriter(s) to lead and oversee the underwriting of complex FHA transactions, providing expert guidance and decision-making support.
  • Work with Chief Underwriter(s) to coordinate with the risk management team to identify, assess, and mitigate potential risks associated with FHA transactions.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for escalated underwriting issues, providing resolution and support as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ten or more years prior experience  in a similar position.
