Harlem Village Academies (HVA) is a community of educators pursuing an ambitious and sophisticated approach to pedagogy from PK-12. As a national thought leader in deeper learning, HVA is the only charter school network in New York offering Montessori and culminating in the International Baccalaureate. HVA also operates a graduate school for teachers.

HVA’s educational model focuses on independent thinking, student self-direction, intellectual curiosity, and intrinsic motivation. Serving 98% of Black and Latino students, HVA consistently outperforms the district, city, and state. OPPORTUNITY

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will join a team that is shaping the future of American public education and making a profound impact on the lives of students in Harlem. The COO will be the driving force behind the pursuit of exceptional operational performance required to deliver the world class education HVA provides to students and will play a pivotal role in ensuring that operational infrastructure aligns seamlessly with HVA’s core mission: to prepare students of fine character who graduate from college and make a meaningful contribution to society.

This is an exciting opportunity to create and execute a vision for operational excellence across the organization and to partner with the CEO and Leadership Team to build a transformational school model with the potential to impact thousands of students across the country.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Chief Operating Officer include:

Operations

  • Develop operational vision and systems.
  • Build and improve operational processes.
  • Manage team to oversee and strengthen school operations across all PreK-12 schools, as well as the teachers’ college and new national initiative.
  • Manage team to oversee and strengthen shared operational services for the organization, including facilities, safety, compliance, technology, and procurement.

Talent and Human Resources

  • Set and execute a vision for the HVA talent experience and value proposition in partnership with educational leaders.
  • Manage team to fully recruit, retain, and develop talent across the organization.

Student Enrollment

  • Set and execute a vision for the HVA new family experience in partnership with educational leaders.
  • Manage team to effectively reach out to families and successfully enroll HVA schools.

Data

  • Set and execute a vision for HVA data and data systems in partnership with educational leaders.
  • Manage team to maintain full compliance and ensure educational leaders and teachers have the data they need to inform high-quality instruction.

National Initiative

  • Collaborate with the CEO and other leaders to launch a new national program that will share HVA’s model with others nationwide.

Requirements

To fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Chief Operating Officer candidate will have:

  • Minimum 15, ideally 20-25+ years of related professional experience in a similar setting
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Previous experience managing school operations, compliance, facilities projects, and/or human resources across multiple schools
  • Prior experience in organizational leadership and managing through layers of teams


ADDITIONAL QUALITIES & COMPETENCIES

  • Prior experience in founding an organization or team

Benefits

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $175,000-$225,000 and is commensurate with experience and qualifications. HVA is committed to providing their team with a range of benefit offerings at a competitive value.
