Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

As a member of a small, early stage team, you will have the opportunity to work on every stage of product development, from concept to design with implementation to validation. You will help build out best practices and procedures to ensure fast development velocity and robust test coverage. This role requires a self-starter who enjoys working in an interdisciplinary environment to solve challenging integration problems involving thermal, fluid and mechanical systems to deliver on next generation products in the space of consumer food waste recycling.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate cross functionally with Product Management, Mechanical Product Design Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering and Supply Chain teams to architect devices such as food grinding/dehydration systems, and bring conceptual solutions into robust, scalable, high-performing products.
  • Own System-level integration of electromechanical subsystems such as fans and heater systems, collaborating with Mechanical Product Design Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Firmware Engineering teams
  • Develop test criteria and set design targets for subsystem functionality
  • Risk assessment of new and existing systems using FMEA techniques, devising mitigation strategies, and development of solutions to improve system performance, reliability, and cost.
  • Provide hands-on technical ability to drive complex problem-solving efforts at development and production stages
  • Develop and manage system and subsystem requirements, test documentation outlining device design, capabilities, and operating procedures, translating business needs into rigorous hardware design specifications.

Skills and Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in mechanical, electrical, aerospace or a related engineering field
  • 2+ years of experience in the design or testing of complex systems or subsystems such as dynamic motor and/or thermal control systems
  • Ability to write and edit python programs to facilitate analysis and testing efforts. Familiarity with micro-controllers or raspberry pis is a plus.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Computer-Aided Design (CAD).  NX experience preferred
  • Hands-on experience making and testing prototypes
  • Demonstrated experience creating simple solutions to complex problems
  • Excellent communication skills in written, verbal, and visual forms, with the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly.
