About You:
Merlin is looking for a driven individual excited to help bring the Merlin Pilot to life. You will support the design, build, modification, and maintenance of our software and system integration laboratories. You will work primarily on-site at our headquarters in Boston MA with occasional travel to other Merlin sites, coordinating with hardware engineers and other discipline engineers to safely carry out work on our test benches and aircraft simulators. You also like spending time around airplanes, and would be willing to travel to participate in ground and flight testing. You have a background in aviation or robotics, and are comfortable working in a lab setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Build, test, and troubleshoot wire harness assemblies according to aerospace standards
  • Operate hand tools such as wire strippers, crimpers, heat guns, and soldering equipment.
  • Read & interpret circuit schematics and wire harness diagrams.
  • Operate lab test equipment including multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, logic analyzers, and specialty protocol analyzers.
  • Assist with the collection of data and debugging of various aerospace signaling standards including serial (RS232/422/485), ARINC 429, AFDX, Ethernet, MIL-STD-1553, CAN
  • Procure of lab supplies including wires, connectors, and other avionics equipment
  • Collaborate with systems and software engineers to carry out integration & test activities
  • Maintain hardware and software configuration records for all lab assets
  • Maintain equipment calibration logs and coordinate with metrology vendors to keep equipment in serviceable condition
  • Support integration, testing, and troubleshooting of aircraft electrical systems.
  • Perform careful manual operations involving fine pitch wires and wire pins
  • Read extremely small text on wires, connectors, and devices
  • Lift up to 50 pounds

Qualifications:

  • AS in Electronics, Avionics, or similar focus with fundamental electronics courses as the major.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in the aviation, robotics, or other relevant industries.
  • Experience assembling and debugging systems containing COTS/MOTS modules, custom circuits, software, sensors, and human / machine / graphical user interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of integrating various components using standard interface protocols such as ARINC 429, RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485.
  • Familiarity with lab test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, current probes, data acquisition, and bus analyzers.
  • Experience with creating and interpreting system schematics, wiring diagrams, and subsystem block diagrams.
  • Experience with aviation/aerospace wire harness design, assembly, connector component selection, and sourcing.
  • Outstanding organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

Nice to Haves:

  • Previous experience with aircraft wiring installation and modification per AC43.13-1B
  • Experience with electrical schematic CAD tools (AutoCAD, Solidworks, VeSys/Capital, or similar)
  • Previous training/certification in an ESD control system
  • Solder certification to IPC-A-610 or similar
  • Comfortable with Windows and Linux operating systems
