Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

CFS is seeking a working CAD Group Leader that can contribute to the design of various Tokamak systems. The ideal candidate has a full understanding of Teamcenter, NX and can quickly come up to speed on CFS Standards. You will have the ability to direct a team of CAD designers/drafters, overseeing their daily tasks.

This team member will:

  • Have near-term focus- drive SPARC systems through final design, work with a cross-functional team of engineers, scientists, designers, and analysts
  • Have long-term focus- lead and oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of complex engineering projects, including design, procurement, and build activities
  • Communicate with engineering teams to review drawing changes to suit manufacturing process capabilities
  • Provide mechanical engineering support for resolution of manufacturing and installation issues via drawing changes
  • Manage a team of CAD Designers
  • Provide support on configuration management and change management processes with the engineering teams
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance team culture to drive project execution and achieve collective goals. Working in a team with a wide variety of backgrounds and skillsets. Welcoming constructive feedback and different perspectives
  • Report on and be accountable for project progress to the head of 3D CAD integration

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 10 years’ experience in engineering and project management working with a wide range of engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing
  • 5 years minimum experience in creating models of mechanical parts using Siemens NX CAD software
  • Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms in Siemens NX, version 1980 or later
  • Understanding of NX Electrical and Mechanical Routing applications
  • Full understanding of Teamcenter or Active Workspace
  • Understand dimensional capabilities of machined parts and weldments
  • Candidate will have the technical depth and proven experience to create and review drawings to ASME Y14.100 and ASME Y14.5 standards
  • Candidate will demonstrate knowledge of GD&T and the use of CAD tools to create/refine designs and drawings for assemblies and custom parts made of forgings, machined parts, and weldments
  • Strong sense of self-motivation and personal accountability regarding decision-making and supervising teams
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with the capacity to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Thorough understanding of engineering product life cycle with experience in driving products through phase-gate design reviews such as CDR, PDR, FDR or equivalent
  • Strong leadership abilities; comfortable taking on exciting challenges with minimal supervision
  • Dynamic and creative: Thrives in a fast-paced environment where several interdependent technologies are being developed simultaneously. Foster an environment of innovation and creative problem-solving within the project team
  • Experience with magnets, large/heavy assembly processes, thermo-mechanical assemblies, machining, welding, and/or VPI (vacuum pressure impregnation) is preferred. Experience working with Excel, PowerPoint, Jira, Confluence

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
