Graphic Design Internship – Print, Packaging & Promotional Production

Step beyond digital and into the world of tangible design with our Graphic Design Internship, focused on print, packaging, and promotional item production. In this role, you'll gain hands-on experience preparing real customer files for print, learning essential prepress techniques and setting up artwork for advanced finishes like die cutting, foil stamping, embossing, and more. You'll build expertise in both 4-color process and spot color workflows, support customer projects with professional design services, and learn how to set up personalized pieces using variable data printing. Interns will also gain exposure to custom print and packaging engineering, with opportunities to create physical prototypes and mock-ups that bring ideas to life. This is a unique chance to build a versatile, real-world skill set that will make you a standout in the competitive design industry.

Deliverables  

As an intern on the PDE team, you’ll contribute to real production work while learning the ropes of technical prepress and design. Your contributions will help ensure our customer files are print-ready and high quality. 

  • Support high-quality, accurate file processing
  • Troubleshoot and resolve prepress issues quickly and professionally
  • Create polished, professional graphic designs that meet customer needs
  • Contribute to a low error/spoilage rate in production
  • Help deliver a great customer experience 

What You Will Do:

You’ll get hands-on experience with everything from typesetting and file prep to packaging prototypes and customer consultations. 

  • Process and adjust customer-submitted files for print production
  • Respond to internal prepress and design requests in a timely manner
  • Join calls with Customer Advocates and Customer Success Managers to observe and support technical discussions
  • Help prototype and test packaging or custom print formats
  • Typeset documents and make layout adjustments
  • Prepare and map print files for variable data printing (VDP)
  • Stay current on industry tools and best practices
  • Coach internal teams or customers on basic prepress concepts 

What We’re Looking For:

This role is ideal for someone with a mix of creativity and technical curiosity—someone who’s eager to build their skills in a professional setting. 

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Technically curious and quick to learn new tools or processes
  • Detail-oriented, with strong accuracy and quality control
  • Able to communicate clearly and work well with teams
  • Comfortable working in situations without one “right” answer
  • Interested in innovation, improvement, and solving problems
  • Graphic design skills and a strong visual eye  
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and general PC tools are a plus
  • Willing to represent PFL’s values: People, Relationships, Progress, Results 

Compensation:  $25.00/hr

Details: The ideal candidate will be available to work full-time from mid-May through September and must be able to continue either full-time or part-time into the fall. Training will take place on-site in Livingston, once onboarded there is the option to work from our Bozeman location.
