This is an exciting opportunity to join the Trócaire’s Board of Directors. We are looking for an individuals with International Development/ Humanitarian expertise and experience. Trócaire Board and Board Committee members are unpaid, voluntary positions.
About Trócaire
Trócaire is an International Non-Governmental Organisation (INGO), established by the Irish Catholic Bishops conference in 1973.
We work with local partners in the world’s most at-risk communities and with people in Ireland to tackle the underlying causes of poverty and injustice and respond to the crises they create. Together we bring about positive and lasting change for a just world.
We work in partnership with local organisations and communities in over 15 countries, in Africa, Central America, the Middle East and Asia. We are rooted in social justice and our mandate includes global citizenship education, campaigning and achieving structural change through policy and advocacy work from Ireland. We raise funds from the Irish public and from institutional donors.

Trócaire Board of Directors
Trócaire is a Company Limited by Guarantee and registered Charity, headquartered in the Republic of Ireland. The Company Members delegate responsibility for strategic leadership and oversight of the organisation to the Board of Directors.
The Board has overall responsibility for the strategic, financial and operational direction of Trócaire. The Board plays a key role in overseeing strategy, policy and management; financial reporting and controls; risk management and internal controls; people and culture; and governance.
The Board consists of up to 15 people of diverse backgrounds. The Chair is a member of the Irish Bishops’ Conference. The Board meets approximately six times a year, plus the AGM. Meetings are a combination of face-to-face (2) in or near Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland, and online (4). Meetings last approximately four hours.
International Programmes Advisory Committee
The Board has five Committees[1]. The Board member who is currently being recruited would also sit on the International Programmes Advisory Committee (IPAC). IPAC is the committee of the Board of Trócaire with responsibility for the oversight of the organisation’s development and humanitarian programming and policy influencing. IPAC meets approximately five times a year, with meetings lasting approximately four hours.

Trócaire Board Terms of Reference
Key areas of responsibility of our Board of Directors include the following:
· Champion the mission, vision, values and ethos of Trócaire;
· Provide long-term strategic direction, approving organisational strategy and monitoring performance;
· Review the financial performance of Trócaire and approve the annual budgets;
· Ensure Trócaire complies with all legal and regulatory requirements;
· Ensure Trócaire upholds the highest standards of governance;
· Ensure adequate provision is made for safeguarding the assets of Trócaire;
· Ensure Trócaire has appropriate policies and systems in place;
· Ensure that effective safeguarding systems are in place;
· Ensure compliance to all statutory obligations of a Company Director and registered Charity Trustee.
For this particular Board role, we are seeking to recruit an individual with the following skills and experience:
· Significant international development or humanitarian experience.
· A working knowledge of localisation / locally-led development and partnership.
· A good understanding of the current international landscape for development and humanitarian work.
· Strong strategic and analytical skills.
· A strong understanding of and commitment to global social justice .
Expressions of Interest
We are now seeking expressions of interest for a new Board (and IPAC) member, for a term of three years with the possibility of one term renewal.
Expressions of interest are requested from individuals who are willing to contribute their knowledge and skills to Trócaire’s Board. Directors are appointed on a voluntary basis (non-remunerated).
In line with our Board Diversity Policy and our localisation agenda, we particularly welcome applications from individuals whose background and/or ethnicity reflects the diversity of the communities that Trócaire serves. Candidates from the Global South are encouraged to put themselves forward.
