The Geochemistry Database Co-op will be part of the Orebody Knowledge (OBK) team. The OBK team are a diverse group of multi-disciplinary Subject Matter Experts that applies the fundamental principles of geochemistry to better understand Teck’s orebodies. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to assess geochemical data and apply accepted Quality Controls (QC), thus helping ensure that these foundational datasets are fit for use. These foundational geochemical assay databases are the fundamental inputs which inform resources and reserve calculations.
This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in data analysis and data compilation, while gaining valuable insights into validated industry methodologies. The ideal candidate is keen to deepen their understanding of the application of geochemistry and quality control principles. If you have curiosity about geochemical data, this is an excellent opportunity to learn how to manage and assess geochemical data helping ensure it is fit for purpose.
Depending on the needs and location of the team, you will need to work PDT or MDT or relocate to a specific office (site-based). You must also currently be a student enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution and will be enrolled throughout the duration of the co-op term (you will also be returning back to the post-secondary institution once the co-op term is completed). Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Support the application of robust Quality Control principles on analytical data generated and reported by 3rd parties and internally, helping ensure the geochemical data meets Teck’s requirements and is fit for purpose
- Use statistical techniques to measure accuracy and precision of analytical results and communicate findings through email/memo/phone calls to project collaborators.
- Assist with helping streamline and standardize Teck's geochemical databases across all sites and operations
- Engage with and support projects across Teck helping support their geochemical/analytical needs
- Create and assess new ideas and technologies to improve our business operations.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Geology, Chemistry or related fields
- Able to build and nurture positive working relationships with individuals of a diverse set of backgrounds
- Familiarity with common statistical techniques for evaluating analytical data for accuracy and precision (standard deviation, mean, median etc.)
- Previous experience applying QC controls to analytical data or in a production environment is helpful
- Familiarity with data management such as acQuire relational databases, Access, Datashed etc. are considered an asset
- Strong attention to detail and adept at identifying patterns/anomalies in dataset
- Curiosity about geochemistry, analytical chemistry and/or data science
- Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, R, etc.) and common office efficiency tools (Excel, Word, Outlook) is highly valued.
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the capability to communicate complex ideas to all levels and partners
- Proven ability to learn new technologies and platforms quickly, accurately, and efficiently
- Experience in geochemical laboratories and some knowledge of common analytical techniques such as AAS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS, pXRF, XRF would be considered an asset
