Genotyping Operations Manager

We are looking for a Genotyping Operations Manager who will enable Our Future Health to achieve high-quality genotyped samples and meet the data release milestones. The Genotyping Operations Manager will plan, coordinate and oversee operational activities required to manage the Genotyping of all samples collected for Our Future Health. This will include the continuing development, implementation and improvement of genotyping processes, working in close collaboration with suppliers and internal teams. 

Our Future Health is the UK’s largest ever health research programme, bringing people together to develop new ways to detect, prevent, and treat diseases. We are a charity, supported by the UK Government, in partnership with charities and industry. We work closely with the NHS and with public authorities across all nations and regions of the UK.

What you’ll be doing

You will work closely with the Bio-Sample Quality Manager to monitor genotyping quality, investigate non-conformances and drive continuous improvement with suppliers and operational processes. Your key responsibilities will also include:  

  • Management of all operational aspects of the genotyping workflow per required project timelines and manage the receipt of samples from our processing laboratories across the U.K. 
  • Reconciliation of samples throughout the genotyping process to ensure robust and high-quality pipelines. 
  • Act as the operational point-of-contact between genotyping supplier and Our Future Health. 
  • Understanding in detail the genotyping workflows and deliverables including monitoring KPIs and SOP document management.
  • Assist with the oversight of the costs associated with genotyping, including facilitating orders and managing invoices.   
  • Lead operational meetings and the genotyping workflow design, enabling continuous improvement. 
  • Work closely with colleagues in the Bio-Sample and Logistics team to ensure upstream processes provide high-quality samples and meet the requirements for genotyping. 
  • Collaborate with Our Future Health colleagues within the product, technology and data teams to develop a robust sample management tool. 
  • Work with the Science team to ensure genotyping operations and quality meet the scientific requirements of the Our Future Health project. 
  • Ensure the supplier understands and is aligned with OFH on sample forecasts, processing throughputs, and expectations with regards to other contractual and non-contractual activities along the priorities set by the Programme. 
  • Escalate supplier-related performance, risk and relationship issues and collaborate with the genetic data team to develop and continuously improve best practice for operational excellence.  

Requirements

You will be an excellent communicator able to build and maintain supplier relationships; with strong organisational skills including demonstrable experience of leading operational workflows with multiple dependencies and stakeholders. You will have some of the following skills and experience:

  • Life sciences degree or equivalent experience. 
  • Working knowledge of the UK clinical research environment, including appropriate sample collection, handling and storage regulations & guidelines (e.g. HTA). 
  • Extensive experience working within a laboratory setting, including processing and/or analysis of samples. 
  • Knowledge of blood processing protocols and molecular assays (e.g.  Illumina genotyping assays). 
  • Experience working with external partners and suppliers, demonstrating excellent diplomacy skills. 
  • Experience with the development and use of sample management software tools. 
  • Available to attend laboratory visits as required. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills. 
  • Proven ability to multi-task with excellent organisational and time management skills.   
  • Previous of experience of devising and implementing Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures related to collection, handling and shipping of bio-samples for research.   
  • Strong written communication skills, with experience in creation of SOPs and policies. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire effective teamwork and motivate colleagues.  
  • Highly motivated with a proactive approach to work and ability to work independently. 
  • A high level of numeracy, analytical, and interpretive skills.   
  • Experience working with bioinformaticians or data operations specialists on managing genetic data processing workflows would be advantageous.
