Our Accessibility Engineers enjoy tackling complex problems while working with other members of our cross-disciplinary teams to deliver elegant products across a modern technology stack. What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
- Write and review code, ensuring high standards of quality, maintainability, and test coverage
- Solve complex accessibility issues so deliverables are accessible for all people
- Perform manual and automated accessibility testing
- Share solutions with coworkers and mentor others on accessibility best practices
- Assist with writing VPATs (Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates)
- Solve problems across the tech stack alongside other engineers on the team, building new systems and improving existing ones
- Collaborate with team members and government/client stakeholders to craft creative solutions and build technology products that improve the communities we serve
- Engage with coworkers across disciplines according to Agile and Scrum methodologies, including participating in planning, breaking down requirements into tasks, refinement and estimation, etc.
What You Know (Requirements)
- While we’re looking for applicants at the L3 (4+ years of experience) to Senior (6+ years of experience) levels, engineers at all career levels are welcome to apply.
- The building blocks of the web, including how to write semantic HTML with WAI-ARIA and how to write clean CSS that conforms to design systems
- How to leverage accessibility tools to perform manual analysis
- How to use assistive technology, including screen readers like VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS, etc., as well voice input technologies like Voice Control, and keyboard navigation
- Open-source programming languages, like JavaScript/TypeScript, Ruby, Python, Java, etc.
- Frameworks, libraries, or runtimes, like React, Rails, Node, Next, Angular, Spring, etc.
- Design systems like U.S. Web Design System, CMS Design System, VA Design System, MUI, etc.
- Testing frameworks like Jest, Testing Library, Mocha, Playwright, Cypress, etc., and how to write unit and end-to-end tests for accessibility
- How to leverage the command line via shell scripting
- How to deliver polished, scalable, maintainable, performant code
- How to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Agile and Scrum development methodologies
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- 3+ years of experience building applications with open-source programming languages
- 3+ years of experience working with modern frameworks, libraries, or runtimes
- 2+ years of experience working with assistive technology, including screen readers like VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS, etc., as well voice input technologies like Voice Control, and keyboard navigation
- 2+ years of experience developing software that is compliant to accessibility standards (WCAG, Section 508, etc.)
- Experience developing software in a remote environment
- Experience in digital services, government, or federal consulting
- Certification in accessibility (CPACC, WAS, 508TT, etc.)
