About the team and position
The Safe & Secure Team helps to keep our 20,000+ associates, who work at our 200+ various locations, safe and secure every day. By collaborating with various Carvana teams and external partners the Safe & Secure Team delivers strategic planning, operational risk program development, operational Safe & Secure processes, data analytics, inventory reconciliation and control, learning and awareness program support, and project management. In partnership with the Field and Operations Team, the Safe & Secure Support Team plays an integral function in delivering our mission to every associate at every site.
The Functional Lead, Safe & Secure will be a part of the site Safe & Secure Leadership Team providing support to 400+ associates who work within 4 business units that manage a site that sits on 120+ acres holding 9,000 vehicles. The Functional Lead, Field Safe & Secure will work closely with the Manager, Field Safe & Secure and Facility Leadership Team (Operations, Wholesale, Logistics, and People Operations) in supporting the safety of our associates and the protection of our assets in a dynamic working environment. The Functional Lead, Field Safe & Secure will be directly responsible for the site’s incident management program, DOT compliance, leadership of the Safety Action Team, process management of the Safe & Secure technology at our sites, and support of efforts relating to operational risk optimization. This position will provide day to day leadership of the Safe & Secure associates on second and third shifts. The ideal candidate must possess leadership and people management skills, strong communication skills, quantitative rigor, and must be able to exercise independent judgment and work collaboratively with Carvana’s varied operational functions. Most importantly, you will see your insights have an immediate, tangible impact every day in a disruptive and rapidly growing company. The position is field based and reports directly to the Manager, Field Safe & Secure or Area Manager, Field Safe & Secure depending on the size of the facility.
What you’ll be doing
- Day to day leadership of direct reports of the second and third shift Safe & Secure Associate Team at the assigned facility. Provide clear expectations, support through consistent coaching, and performance management.
- Directly lead Safe & Secure processes relating to our Incident Management Program and Over the Road Safety Program(DOT) at the site
- Act as the captain of the Safety Action Team ensuring engagement of our teams at the site to provide a strong culture of safety behavior is evident in day to day operations.
- Availability to work non-standard shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays to meet business needs. Flexibility to respond to incidents at the site outside of standard business hours.
- Plan and Lead the Incident Management Program for the site, focusing on sustainable awareness and effective preparedness. Key supporter in an emergency situation for the site.
- Lead efforts relating to the identification and tracking of units that are being taken “off lot” to ensure effective inventory controls are in place.
- Directly lead the processes related to our Safe & Secure Technology that supports the site. Ensure equipment is properly functioning, that issues are addressed, and that our processes relating to badge access, server room controls, monitoring alerts, and overall health of the program are running like a well oiled machine.
- Ensure all “Aclaimant” incidents are properly recorded and system information is accurate and actionable. Complete after action reviews to determine root causes of reported safety incidents and make improvement recommendations to the Manager of Safe & Secure
- Utilizes data to assess the Safe & Secure business at the site reporting key wins and opportunities to the Safe & Secure Manager. As directed, provides support to specific tasks that need to be completed to drive metric improvement.
- Foster open and productive working relationships with other applicable company departments.
- Exercise prudent discretion regarding confidential and sensitive personnel information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Domestic travel required - 10%.

- Completion percentage of after incident Safety reviews and suggestions for improvement

What you should know/have
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- At least 5 years of Safe and Secure experience, preferably including distribution, warehousing, and fulfillment.
- At least 1 year experience directly supervising and managing a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and data-driven skill set.
- Experience implementing Risk Mitigation programs to improve company profitability in collaboration with partners within a complex business environment.
- Experience working closely and communicating effectively with a diverse set of stakeholders in an ever-changing, rapid growth environment with tight deadlines; Ability to take initiative in a constantly-changing work environment while maintaining flexibility and a collaborative attitude.
- Experience investigating and resolving theft and fraud issues.
- Able to help create, develop and implement process improvement(s).
- Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Crisis Management/Incident Response experience.
- Experience leading OSHA Program implementation within a distribution, warehousing, and fulfillment environment.
- Must promote the company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients, and business partners.
- Knowledge of how to utilize Google Microsoft systems.
- Valid driver's license, and insurable DMV required.
- OSHA 10 Hour Training Certification preferred.
