Ouster is hiring a

Field Application Engineer (FAE)

Full-Time
At Ouster, we build sensors and tools for engineers, roboticists, and researchers, so they can make the world safer and more efficient. We've transformed LIDAR from an analog device with thousands of components to an elegant digital device powered by one chip-scale laser array and one CMOS sensor. The result is a full range of high-resolution LIDAR sensors that deliver superior imaging at a dramatically lower price. Our advanced sensor hardware and vision algorithms are used in autonomous cars, drones and many other applications. If you’re motivated by solving big problems, we’re hiring key roles across the company and need your help!

Ouster is hiring a Field Application Engineer (FAE) to help our customers integrate the Ouster sensors into their projects and make them successful with lidar. This position will work closely with the business development team and customers in pre & post-sale technical activities.

As an FAE you will develop skills in our current product features, tools and design flows, as well as facilitate adoption of these solutions with a variety of customer systems.

The ideal candidate would display an interest or proficiency in lidar physics, electromechanical systems, basic thermal engineering considerations, electrical system troubleshooting (oscopes, multimeters), signal protocols, computer networking, and electromechanical integration.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be the expert liaison between Customers, Business Development, and Engineering
  • Consult the customer through the process of design, testing, and integration into new and existing development projects.
  • Proactively come up with Proof-Of-Concept (POC) designs for various use-cases/real-time applications leveraging the latest tools and technologies available
  • Troubleshooting system applications on customer's request, resolving other engineering issues regarding systems application, conducting regular follow up on customer's activities, and monitoring the same for obtaining new sales opportunities
  • Interact closely with the leading technology vendors to understand the new technologies/architectures being rolled out and how to apply them
  • Assist the Business Development team through pre & post sale activities
  • Conduct training for clients on the latest tools & technologies
  • Build on the knowledge & expertise gained from the previous projects to build better designs and POCs
  • Strategically and effectively communicate to customers
  • Many of these responsibilities are most effectively carried out in person at customer sites so travel will be a necessity once restrictions are eased

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Hunger for continual learning and applying knowledge to solve technical problems
  • Initiative to self-educate and seek learning opportunities related to lidar and its applications
  • Experience with hands-on debugging with power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes
  • Experience in robotics, electromechanical systems, and integration of sensors.
  • Cursory skills in Python, C++, BASH, Matlab scripting
  • Basic understanding of signal protocols (UART, CAN, RS-232) and numerical representations (binary, hexadecimal)
  • Strong experience working in Windows and Linux environments
  • Understanding of networking concepts such as mDNS, Link-Local, IPv4, IPv6, DHCP, Subnet Mask, HTTP REST API, SSH, UDP, and TCP/IP protocols and applications
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) and related robotics software tools (desired, but not required)

We acknowledge the confidence gap at Ouster. You do not need to meet all of these
requirements to be the ideal candidate for this role.
