Introduction
The Engineering Department (EN) pushes back the limits of technology so that physicists can carry out their research. Within the Electrical Engineering Group (EL) of the EN Department, you will join the Fibre Optics Section (FO), which is in charge of CERN's optical fibre infrastructure. The Section ensures the technical expertise in the field of fibre optics, and provides optical structured cabling for multiple systems on the CERN site, including in the accelerators and experimental areas. The Section provides engineering support to the CERN users, centralises their cabling requests and organises the installation activities through external industrial-support contractors. Additionally, the Section carries out research on specialty fibres for both communication and sensing applications and provides fibre-based systems for radiation dose monitoring.
Are you a qualified Fibre Optics Technician, with experience in preparing installation works and supervising the deployment of fibre optics infrastructures? Contribute your skills to the infrastructure for the major communication systems that constitute CERN's accelerator complex. Take part!
Functions
- Take responsibility for processing optical cabling requests: collect needs, provide technical advice and manage all the steps toward the delivery of the installations to the final users.
- Participate in defining the optical fibre link architecture including duct types, fibres and connections based on your experience, and propose original methodologies for optical cabling and tests.
- Organize and supervise optical fibre cabling installations and acceptance tests: ensure worksite coordination, verify the quality of the work performed by contractors, and the respect of all provisions of the CERN safety rules and prevention plans.
- Organize and execute quality control tests of the supplied fibre components.
- Organize in-the-field preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair activities.
- Prepare documentation of the installations and assure quality data management in the optical fibre database.
- Prepare work progress reports and provide regular presentations on the status of the activities.
Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Fibre Optics or a related field.
Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in deployment of optical fibre cabling, preferably by air-blowing method.
- Demonstrated experience in testing and measurement of optical fibres.
- Substantial experience in the preparation of work files, as well as in work supervision and acceptance of optical installations.
- Proven ability in drawing up technical documentation, including the use of database tools, and reporting.
- Experience in the field of electrical cabling, installation and test, would be an asset.
Technical competencies:
- Organisation, planning and control: in particular technical supervision of contractors.
- Quality management: of optical fibres cabling and systems.
- Design and development of optical data links: in particular, knowledge of optical cabling techniques (e.g. cable blowing) and optical fibre connectors and connector-fitting (e.g. by splicing).
- Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques: in the fibre optics domain.
Behavioural competencies:
- Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting and taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen
- Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work and being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind
- Solving Problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them
- Communicating Effectively: demonstrating a pro-active approach to resolving differences and addressing issues of conflict constructively, as well as providing others with timely information
- Working in Teams: contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude and addressing issues
Language skills:
Spoken and written English. Ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts would be an advantage.
