Expression of interest - Character Designer for Visual Development

We are an internationally recognized, Emmy Award®-winning studio – in two prominent Canadian cities, Vancouver and Montreal – and the creative force behind top audience hits such as The Dragon Prince, Rick and Morty, Teen Titans Go!, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. 

In preparation for future greenlit projects, we wanted to open this Expression of Interest and connect with talented character designers. As a Visual Development Character Designer for 3D production at Bardel, you will play a vital role in exploring and identifying the look of characters in the very beginning part of production. You will work closely with the Head of Visual Development and directors to conceptualize and drive the stylization of the characters. 

 

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Explore different styles of character design, rendering techniques to find a unique voice of the character design language for this particular production. 
  • Demonstrate a broad range of Character Design abilities in a collaborative environment to conceptualize and create the overall look, attitude and style of the project. 
  • Exercise a keen eye for creative continuity. 
  • Meet project deadlines and milestones as set by the Director and the production department. 
  • Demonstrate good communication, proactive toward problems and exhibit a collaborative, supportive approach to working with other team members. 
  • Attend & participate in all creative look of picture meetings.  
  • Ensure preparation and presentation of all artwork deliverables are prepared for required meetings. 

What you’ll bring: 

  • 3+ years of production design experience in film / animation / gaming industry. 
  • Strong traditional drawing skills and colour fundamentals (illustration, painting, composition, human anatomy / organic forms, color theory, perspective, 2D & 3D design).
  • Strong drawing skills and sense of design, character, and composition.
  • Familiar with 3D animation pipelines.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner.
  • Ability to organize and manage time effectively to meet deadlines. 
  • Photoshop experience required; Maya, Blender, Shotgrid familiarity a plus.
