Wolt is hiring an

Engineering Team Lead, Promotions

Helsinki, Finland
Full-Time

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Promotions team. You’ll focus on building a platform to enable internal marketers, external merchants, and enterprise brands to manage promotional campaigns. This is an exciting role with a lot of impact, and is at the forefront of Wolt’s growth story and journey within the adtech and promotions space.

In terms of tech, Kotlin is the main backend programming language of the team, TypeScript and React for frontend, Swift & Kotlin for Native Mobile. In terms of architecture, we are taking into use event-driven solutions more and more (Kafka etc.). For databases, we use PostgreSQL & Redis and collect lots of data into Snowflake. Our SRE stack is built around DataDog. We work in a cross-functional environment and right now the team consists of backend, frontend as well as data & analytics, and of course your main partner in Product.

About You

You’ve built a lot of software – shipped products, created platforms, tools and modules, worked with every framework under the sun and have worked on products serving thousands of users both as an engineer and later, a lead. You’re as excited as we are about learning every day, and solving really hard engineering problems that no one else is. You've also operated services and/or scaled software at a high level, ensuring customer up-time and safety are your foremost tenets.

You're passionate about software quality, repeatability, testability and maintainability in production. When you need clarity, you go to the product owner – or even a user – and talk to them until you get it. When you need results, you are relentless in getting results, and never throw your hands up in defeat because your slack message goes ignored, but instead find ways to get what you need.

As the leader of the team, you inspire, facilitate and enable the team to do what they do best. You have experience in all levels of team leadership - from the low level stuff like running the development cycle, providing insight on technical solutions, and solving day to day problems for the team. You know how to operate a service, and can interrogate the metrics and dashboards of your software to personally understand when things aren’t working and surface them to the team. You can train your team to do this too. You understand the challenges associated with operating a large-scale system in production, and your designs and architectures reflect that understanding. Shipping on time with high quality makes your heart feel warm.

You also have experience as a mentor and coach - you hold regular, meaningful 1-1’s, and prioritize the time of your team members over the churn of an often full calendar. You know how to challenge and keep your team accountable to audacious goals, while also providing a support network for people to feel safe failing and learning in their growth journey. You provide actionable and insightful feedback for the team, tied to your own personal experience and anecdotes to provide context and grounding. You would never ask your team to do something you aren’t willing to do yourself, although the times when you do touch code are likely few and far between.

You also know how to operate on a high level as the face of your team. You understand how to take the raw estimates and timelines of team projects and build a crisp and clear narrative about your team for leadership. You know how to manage expectations and communicate to your stakeholders in the language that they understand, whether that be design, product, engineering leadership, or business partners. With stakeholders and team members you are diplomatic, persuasive, and usually right. You’re skilled at brokering agreements between teams that can, frankly, often have competing priorities and roadmaps, so that you get your stuff shipped. You keep stakeholders as accountable as your own reports, and are creative in finding technical solutions that prevent your team from getting blocked. You never blame a missed timeline on a dependency that doesn’t come through in time, because you understand that it’s your responsibility to find a path forward.

You remain open minded when challenged. When you’re wrong, you’re happy to learn something. You’re humble in the face of your team's misses, and able to think on your feet and move the team in the right direction when new information challenges your previous plans. You protect your team from direct blame, while still holding them accountable to learn and grow from failure.

As an engineering leader in Wolt, expectations are high. We’re hoping that you are the next great leader to join us and raise the bar for the Promotions team ever higher. For this role in particular, we are looking for someone who can run not only a single team but in the future, take responsibility for growing our capabilities across multiple teams, and be the engineering face of a critical part of Wolt and DoorDash’s future product suite.
