About BirdDog
BirdDog is a fast-growing marketplace redefining how hunters and landowners connect. We help landowners turn their property into a revenue-generating asset while giving hunters access to premium, privately-owned hunting experiences. Our platform is evolving beyond just booking hunts—we’re building a complete ecosystem for landowners to manage their land profitably.
We are privately funded by strategic investors, individuals, and family offices who believe in our vision of transforming outdoor recreation and land management. With a growing community of landowners and hunters, strategic partnerships (like Field & Stream), and increasing visibility in the industry, BirdDog is building something that matters. If you’re excited by the challenge of scaling a platform with national reach, solving complex system design problems, and working in a fast-moving, ownership-driven environment, we’d love to talk.
About the Role
BirdDog is looking for an Engineering Team Lead or Engineering Manager to play a pivotal role in scaling our platform and engineering team. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll split time between writing code, leading technical projects, and helping guide our engineering team.
You’ll work closely with our CTO, gradually taking ownership of project and engineering management tasks, while also acting as a key technical partner in product and architectural decisions. When needed, you’ll step in for the CTO on technical or product calls.
If you’re a senior engineer looking to step into a leadership role or a team lead/manager who still enjoys solving technical problems, this role is built for you.
What You’ll Do
-
Build & Scale → Design and develop scalable backend services, APIs, and infrastructure as we expand our marketplace and data platform.
-
Lead & Mentor → Provide technical direction, mentorship, and guidance to engineers (both onshore and offshore).
-
System Design & Architecture → Play a critical role in evolving our system architecture, particularly as we migrate from a monolith to microservices.
-
Technical Strategy & Product Collaboration → Work with product managers and designers to ensure that technical solutions align with business and customer needs.
-
Security & Reliability → Advocate for shift-left security practices and build secure, high-performing systems.
-
Technical Representation → Step in for the CTO when necessary on technical or product discussions.
Who We’re Looking For
-
Thrives in a startup environment → You’re comfortable wearing multiple hats and working in a fast-paced, rapidly scaling company.
-
Passion for the outdoors → You don’t have to be a hunter, but you should resonate with our mission and the outdoor space.
-
Product-minded developer → You think beyond code and consider user impact in every decision.
-
Strong system design experience → You have designed and built scalable, distributed systems.
-
Experience migrating monoliths to microservices → You’ve been part of (or led) a transition from monolithic architecture to microservices and have strong opinions on best practices.
-
Engineering leadership experience → You’ve led teams as a manager or team lead, or you’re eager to step into that role.
-
Security-first mindset → You prioritize security and understand modern best practices for building secure applications.
