Engineering Management @Wistia

As an EM, you will set the technical direction, guide our product strategy, and own the delivery of features. As a critical partner to a Product Manager and Product Designer, you will solve new customer problems and find our next areas of innovation. Your guidance will enable a group of great engineers to reach their highest level of impact and advance their skills.

Engineering management at Wistia is a hands-on, technical leadership role. This is a great opportunity if you thrive as a tactical leader who wants to stay close to the problems. You’ll work alongside your team to produce solutions that our customers will love.

In this role, you will:

  • Enable your team to move quickly and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Regularly contribute key work for your team (e.g., tech specs, code, systems design) and rely on your judgment to determine what areas need your hands-on attention.
  • Ensure reliability and stability in your product area's production environment.
  • Guide engineers to do their best work, advance their skills, and find new opportunities for impact.
  • Manage 2-4 direct reports.
  • Lead the planning and approach for your team's projects.
  • Provide expert input into our product, technology, and business strategies.

Required skills and experience:

  • A wealth of experience in building software products for the web. You have a deep technical skillset in this domain and a strong sense of what makes a product successful.
  • Experience leading software teams. You can effectively manage and oversee the work of several engineers.
  • You are a great collaborator and build strong partnerships with your product and design teammates. You’re also a great communicator and can easily apply your skills in different settings (e.g. leading meetings, 1:1s, code reviews, documentation).
  • You can own and actively manage multiple complex software projects. You’re comfortable guiding your team through ambiguity, trade-offs, and tough decisions when we don’t have complete information.
  • You know how to ship iteratively and manage releases. You’re a natural in the relevant areas of feature flagging, CI/CD pipelines, test automation, observability, alerting, etc.
  • You are comfortable managing and participating in on-call rotations and incident response processes.
  • You are familiar with standard HR practices and can partner with the People Team on training, performance, and career development topics.

Major bonuses:

  • Hands on experience with Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, and React.
  • Specialized skills and knowledge in web video or media products.
