The Team
At SEEK, our teams are typically split into multi-functional, multi-disciplinary squads that work within an APAC matrix organisational structure. You will have accountability for your teams and direct line management responsibility for team roles, including:
- Engineering Managers
- Software Developers / Engineers
- Data Engineers & Platform Engineers
- Business Analysts, Agile Delivery Leads, and Iteration Managers
About the role
The Engineering Manager (EM), is a hands-on technology leadership role and focuses on people, delivery, technical and product / service leadership. You will lead and grow hard-working technology talent and teams, provide exceptional stakeholder management and be accountable for building, delivering, and maintaining our products or internal systems & services.
As a technology leader, you are accountable for the overall technical alignment & health of the product or services you deliver and maintain thereafter, as well as the growth, capability and productivity of an engineering team. EMs are active thought and people leaders, driving continuous improvement as well as customer and commercial outcomes. You operate what you ship, making it critical that you advocate for the right technical solutions that balance time to market with long term maintainability, scalability, and security.
Responsibilities:
People
- Accountable for managing individual performance and professional growth, including personal development and/or leadership capabilities via coaching and mentoring
- Grow team member functional capabilities either directly through line management & coaching efforts or indirectly through technical leaders
- Direct management of a team(s). Create and maintain an high impact team culture that embraces delivery, ownership, teamwork, learning and continual improvement. Maintaining the wellbeing of the team by fostering safety, inclusivity, fun and diversity of thought is essential.
- Lead recruitment and onboarding of permanent and contractor team members in line with SEEK’s hiring process
- Lead through change, applying SEEK’s change principles
Delivery
- Lead multi-functional software development team(s) to deliver exceptional customer outcomes
- Facilitation of regular engagement and communication with broader groups including Leadership Team’s, steering committees, and executives to ensure that system / service / platform health, ongoing development and any risks/issues are visible and well understood by everyone
- Manage the balance of time, scope, cost, and quality for team owned projects and programs. Deliver outcomes safely, predictably, and smoothly in a complex environment
- Embed effective agile practices within your team
- Have a great understanding of the customers your team(s) serve, putting their needs at the centre of all engineering development, guiding priorities based on where impact can be most significant
- Accountability for any commercial management for your team(s), including but not limited to; managing budgets (CAPEX/OPEX), all financial aspects of project or team costs, vendor management and contract negotiations as required.
Technology
- Ensure services /systems / platforms are fit for purpose, well architected and follow current SEEK development practices
- Maintain services / system / platform health in accordance with customer experience, security, performance, availability, maintainability, deployability and efficiency measures.
- Develop and maintain technical roadmaps
- Discover and collaborate with Technical Leaders and the wider Technical Community to assess and implement new methodologies and technologies
- Custodianship for the systems we build or buy, within your team’s ownership. Ensuring systems that you own, serve their intended purpose whilst being performant (Customer Experience), well run and maintained (Operations), suit the larger eco-system (Architecture), are secure (Security) and cost efficient (Cost)
Essential Skills and Experience
- Prior experience working in online marketplace businesses would be considered ideal
- Prior experience working in a global context with companies recognised as adopting world class software development / engineering / delivery practices, would be highly regarded
- Experience leading remote teams in a multi-country / location or matrixed environment would be desirable
- Familiarity with different culture norms and practises, particularly within Asia would be highly desirable
- Prior experience in a leadership role in one of the following technology areas is required:
- Software Development / Engineering / Data Engineering / Software Architecture / Quality Assurance
- IT Service Management or IT Business Analysis / Iteration Management
- Data Science, Ontology or Optimisation
