The role of the Development Manager involves a balance of day-to-day personnel management, as well as managing development projects in a cross-functional manner. Development managers are not just managers, they often operate as technical leads for their project and are expected to commit code (though at a different pace to contributing engineers).
As Development Manager you have a number of responsibilities, but the primary one is to get new functionality into the hands of our customers. Your goal is deliver results to the customer, or market, and do everything necessary to achieve this. You must make sure the development team is able to work as efficiently as possible - advancing towards clear short and long term goals, and that nothing prevents them from doing their work. From the initial project scope, to deploying the product to customer sites, each step is your responsibility. You’ll work with other parts of the organization, including Product Management, Sales Engineering and Customer Success, as well as your own Engineering leadership team. You can, and should, delegate as much as you can, but be ready to check that things are being done as you want, and be ready to jump in if it is not.
Responsibilities
- Own your product and software code base.
- Work with Product Management to trade off new feature development vs sustaining engineering and architectural research.
- Lead cross-functional development, working with an internal project manager to handle project initiatives, issue tracking, scoping and planning.
- Drive the daily standup meeting with the team to ensure the project is on-track and that issues are resolved.
- Work on technical designs and architectural initiatives on a project by project basis.
- Manage individuals supporting their personal/career growth and development.
- Develop team and individual goals/objectives that align to the department and company goals
- Perform consistent and regular individual one on one meetings with team members.
- Be a team player. You love to work with others to find the right solutions.

- Lead, coach, and support team in work definition and planning. You will function as the team’s product owner. You have technical ability to look ahead of the technical stacks and guide the team to stay current with the industry trend
- Lead and coach the team in delivering the planned work, functioning as the team’s project manager
- Relentlessly streamline the process to limit unplanned work. You are the key enabler for the constant reduction of toil
- Facilitate team’s regular ceremonies.
- Collaborate with peers and take the lead to assure stakeholder involvement and project outcomes.
- Take a key role in incident response as an escalation point for command, communication, or scribing functions and continually improve the SRE program
- Assume all human resource responsibilities for team members both full-time and contract

- You don’t have all the answers, but you know how to ask questions that motivate high-performing individuals to collaborate to obtain them
- You have at least two years of managing a high-performing team in a distributed environment
