Engineering Manager, Backend

As an Engineering Manager, Backend at Via, you’ll oversee the development and maintenance of our backend systems, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and efficient. Via prides itself on being a true partner to the public sector in helping make transit better for everyone but especially those in low income and minority communities. Via is not only a category leader in on-demand transit, but has brought its exceptional technology and expertise to the Paratransit & Student transit world. You will be joining Via at a time of rapid growth, impacting hundreds of thousands of riders weekly, many of whom represent special needs populations, students, caregivers, and more. As an Engineering Manager, you’ll play a critical role in designing, developing, implementing, maintaining and troubleshooting in a cutting-edge environment. You will be hands-on in technical duties while building out your team.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead, manage, and grow high-caliber backend engineering teams who design and implement highly scalable, reliable, and performant backend systems and APIs that power Via’s solutions 
  • Drive the technical direction and roadmap for backend development, working closely with cross-functional teams to prioritize initiatives and deliver on business objectives
  • Lead by example, contributing hands-on to coding, debugging, and troubleshooting complex technical issues, and driving initiatives to improve development efficiency and productivity
  • Act as a subject matter expert in backend engineering, providing guidance and thought leadership to teams within our R&D center
  • Define and implement coding standards, development processes, and quality assurance practices to ensure the delivery of clean, maintainable code
  • Work with our world-class product and operations teams to convert ideas into a prioritized backlog, and then turn those ideas into reality.
  • Set clear expectations with your team members, meet with them to mentor them and provide feedback, and continually evaluate their performance.
  • Create a culture of excellence, innovation, and inclusion on your team.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in backend software, with a proven track record of designing and building scalable, high-performance systems
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in Python, Java, C++, or C#
  • Minimum of 2 years experience managing a team
  • Proven record of developing and scaling products that are highly available, distributed, and large scale
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD concepts and hands-on experience with related tools such as Jenkins, GitLab, or Github actions
  • Strong knowledge of database technologies (SQL/MySQL) in low level performance optimizations, including profiling and memory analysis
  • Expertise with cloud platforms: AWS, Serverless, Kubernetes
  • Solid understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and best practices for building maintainable and testable code.
  • A strong leader with the ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor team members to achieve their full potential
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders  
  • Ability to drive work forward independently in a cross-functional, geographically distributed team environment

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Final salary will be determined by the candidate’s experience, knowledge, and skills. Salary reflected does not include equity or variable pay, where applicable
  • Salary Range: $200,000 - $230,000 per year
