Charm Industrial is hiring an

Engineering Maintenance Specialist

Fort Lupton, United States
Full-Time
About Charm

Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.

Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. Since then we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, over a hundred employees, and now have three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. Come join us in 2024 as we aim to become one of the first companies to put 10,000 tons of carbon back underground!

We're looking to expand our team of ambitious creative and hands-on forward-thinking humans. We value psychological safety and collaboration. We take calculated risks and don't sweep mistakes under the rug; instead, we pin them to the wall and learn from them. We value that everyone’s unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work. We encourage you to read our company values.

Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!

About the Role
As an Engineering Maintenance Specialist based out of our Fort Lupton facility, you’ll be responsible for executing pre-defined Preventative Maintenance (PM) work on our fleet of custom pyrolyzers, large capital equipment (wood chippers, industrial screeners, etc.), and supporting machinery (conveyors, scales, etc.). In addition to PM activities, this role will be responsible for investigating component failures and conducting rework/rebuilds of failed components identified by Charm Operations and/or Engineering teams during production.
This role involves an exciting mix of electrical and mechanical systems in an industrial production environment. By working with the cross functional engineering and technician team, you will be directly contributing to increasing system uptime, documenting failures and learnings to better improve hardware design, and executing mission-critical maintenance tasks to scale our production output in 2024 and beyond. By collecting and summarizing maintenance data, this role will also be instrumental in characterizing our machine reliability.
This role will report to the Operations Engineering Manager based out of Fort Lupton. There will be regular meetings with the San Francisco-based team to ensure best practices are maintained and implementation of designs are thoroughly reviewed.
Someone successful in this role will love to solve puzzles of why equipment is not working properly, and will not want to stop until the puzzle is resolved. This person will take pride in thorough documentation + data summaries while ensuring systems are online and operational for our production team. In the event of a failure, we are looking for this person to jump in and assist immediately in problem solving when the machines go down.  A great attitude in the face of challenging and fast-paced environments is a must!

Responsibilities:

  • Study Charm Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and personally operate equipment to increase understanding of reliability, documenting learnings to share with your fellow Operations Engineering team members as you go.
  • Study operator manuals and operate capital machinery / biomass processing equipment to familiarize yourself with possible failure points and high priority maintenance activities.
  • Work to execute and improve our Preventative Maintenance (PM) work scope and task lists based on failures seen in production.
  • Develop detailed and accurate maintenance logs for each piece of equipment; use these maintenance logs to summarize and report to site leadership on machine reliability and maintenance status on a regular basis.
  • While performing routine maintenance on Charm equipment, work with vendors and the Charm procurement team as needed to order replacement components.
  • Work with relevant Engineering resources to develop and maintain a functional Material Review Board (MRB) process to disposition and execute scrap/rework accordingly.
  • Maintain a safe and clean test area by observing all safety instructions, handling materials with the proper precautions, picking up tools and equipment when not in use, and making suggestions for improvements to safety procedures and practices.
  • Use machinery and powered equipment (i.e. forklift, personnel baskets, telehandler, scissor lifts, etc.) when required for test preparation or execution.
  • Give written and verbal feedback on the design and operation of the equipment.

Requirements:

  • Passionate about contributing to our mission and growing the company
  • 3 - 5+ years of hands-on experience around machinery and/or heavy equipment
  • Practical experience assembling/disassembling novel/complex mechanical systems
  • Experience with electrical system operation and maintenance (ideally including high voltage circuits, control cabinets & VFDs, and/or industrial e-stop/safety circuits)
  • The ability to work autonomously and troubleshoot on the job
  • Experience operating forklifts, telehandlers, scissor lifts, and/or a willingness to learn
  • A proactive, professional and “can do” attitude
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl in awkward spaces
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time
  • There may be prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, including a working knowledge of the Google Product Suite (or similar)

Bonus (but not required):

  • Experience operating high temperature and/or high pressure systems
  • Familiarity with chemical processing systems and the terminology associated with them
  • Knowledge of electromechanical systems and general electrical troubleshooting skills, including wiring up industrial equipment.
  • Basic fabrication skills
  • Engineering educational and/or departmental experience
  • Experience with MRB review activities or hardware non-conformance triage methods
  • Direct experience in the handling of high temperature or combustible materials in an industrial automation environment
  • Direct experience with equipment like wood chippers, tractors, harvesting equipment, screening, drying systems, industrial heat exchangers or other large heavy-duty industrial or agricultural equipment
