The HV Battery Technology & Test Lab is seeking a highly motivated Master's or PhD Battery Research Intern to join our team in Farmington Hills, Michigan. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge battery research projects and gain invaluable hands-on experience in the field of materials science or battery chemistry. This 6 month internship will focus on tasks that include organization and planning, project management support, development of improved test procedures, material analysis, data analysis and presentation of results.

This is an on-site internship based at our Farmington Hills, MI office. Candidates must be available to work full-time from January through June 2025.

Although most tasks will be conducted on-site at the Farmington Hills office, some activities will take place at MBRDNA’s business partner facilities within the region, offering a broader perspective on the research and development landscape.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in materials and battery cell evaluations: Perform experimental tasks to test and assess various battery materials and cells, analyzing performance, durability, and efficiency.
  • Draft and improve test procedures: Collaborate with the research team to create and refine battery testing protocols, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility.
  • Documentation and reporting: Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of all experimental activities, results, and procedures. Contribute to technical reports and presentations as needed.
  • Maintain team resources: Manage and update team intranet resources, ensuring that research documentation, protocols, and results are easily accessible and well-organized.
  • Electrochemical characterization: Plan, execute, and analyze electrochemical characterization experiments on battery materials and cells, leveraging techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic cycling.
  • Technology research and trend analysis: Conduct in-depth research on the latest trends, technologies, and advancements in battery materials, cell designs, and energy storage solutions. Present findings to the team to inform future research directions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in the following fields: Chemistry, Material Science, or closely related field
  • Strong understanding of battery technology and principles, with a focus on materials, chemistry, and performance.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory setting is required, preferably involving materials synthesis, characterization, or electrochemical testing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and communicate technical information clearly.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, Python).

Salary:
The current hourly rate for this position is as follows and may be modified in the future: $24 (Graduate Students) / $26 (PhD).
