Education and Outreach Specialist

The Education and Outreach Specialist is responsible for implementing sexual health education and outreach programming in the Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. This position works under the supervision of the Manager of Education and Outreach.

Essential Functions:
1. Provide multi-approach classroom instruction to upstate communities including but not limited to:
a. Multi-session, comprehensive education that is fact-based, inclusive, sex positive, and age-appropriate
b. Single-session sexual health education that is fact-based, inclusive, sex positive, and age-appropriate
c. Peer sexual health education programming for adolescents and adults

2. Teach innovative educational outreach programming prioritizing audiences at highest risk for unplanned pregnancy and STI’s in settings such as schools, community organizations, correctional facilities and treatment centers.

3. Learn and teach PPIL’s high quality, age appropriate, inclusive and fact based sexual health educational curriculum

4. Provide instruction using supportive and inclusive education techniques to classrooms of up to 50 students and large group settings. Use proven classroom behavior management techniques to keep students on track and engaged while teaching

5. Contribute to curriculum development, implementation and adaptation of E&O programming in a designated area and/or with target populations

6. Support efforts of the Development department to acquire funding for Education and Outreach department programs and monitor and report on funded activities (for private grants/foundations, public grants, and individual donors)

7. Track and learn updates to sexual health innovation in healthcare and updates to relevant laws and policies that affect sexual health access

8. Provide an active, reliable presence at health fairs and other community venues, lending accurate information and referrals for community members seeking PPIL services. Promote preventative health care and healthy behaviors for all community members during community engagement activities and connect community organizations to educational opportunities.

9. Develop and foster community relationships through strategic partnerships and collaboration

10. Work closely with community groups, schools, and relevant experts/vendors to assess effectiveness of the program on a regular basis.

11. Through these activities, demonstrate excellent customer service as well as an understanding of and commitment to PPIL core values of access, activism, care, confidentiality, diversity, excellence, integrity, respect, self-determination, and stewardship; practice these values in relations with internal and external customers.

Other Functions:
-Maintain logs and issue regular reports on education and outreach activities to inform colleagues, managers, directors and senior leadership across the organization of Education and Outreach progress.
-Perform student evaluations as required for program needs
-Attend professional development opportunities to learn new and advanced strategies for education and outreach

Supervisor: Manager of Education and Outreach

Status: Hourly, nonexempt from the overtime provision of the wage and salary guidelines.

Transportation: This position requires travel around Chicago and the surrounding suburbs; Access to reliable transportation is a requirement.

Qualifications, Education and Experience:
-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. High School Diploma/GED required.
-Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work through and with people at multiple levels and agencies.
-Exceptional organizational skills, capable of defining an agenda, pacing activities and tracking progress across disciplines and regions.
-Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health.
-Experience with public speaking and behavior management.
-Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Professional and Personal Qualities:
High degree of professionalism, coupled with flexibility to apply professional skills in a variety of situations. Strong public speaking skills; ability to prepare oral presentations on a wide variety of sexual health topics. Strong commitment to the operating goals of Planned Parenthood. Willingness to participate as a team member and work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
